MONTPELIER, Vermont – The full measure of Hurricane Irene's fury came into focus Monday as the death toll passed 44, while towns in the northern U.S. region of New England battled epic floods and millions were still without electricity.
From North Carolina to Maine, communities cleaned up and took stock of the uneven and hard-to-predict costs of a storm that spared the nation's biggest city a nightmare scenario, only to deliver a historic wallop to towns well inland.

Irene Pummels the East Coast
Hurricane Irene has been lowered to tropical storm status after causing widespread flooding and damage along the East Coast, leaving millions without power.

In New York City, where people had braced for a disaster-movie scene of water swirling around skyscrapers, the subways and buses were up and running again in time for the Monday morning commute. And to the surprise of many New Yorkers, things went pretty smoothly.
But to the north, landlocked Vermont contended with what its governor called the worst flooding in a century. Streams also raged out of control in rural, upstate New York.

Have you ever been to Vermont RT? there is plenty of high ground to go to right in one's own community. Quite a different topography from the sea level beaches and flat lands near the ocean. Also quite different than New York City. You really are quite the provincial if you don't know enough about the geography of this country's different regions to ask that question.

The Federal Government didn't evacuate New York or any other area... The governors and mayors of the respective areas did... FEMA can make recommendations and warnings based on data... But they don't evacuate.

So, what's the point?

I thought RT was for states rights. He should be asking "How come the governor of Vermont didn't evacuate Vermont?" not expecting the federal government to do it.

Apparently, Gov.Shumlin didn't think it was necessary, even though some guy on an Internet forum way over in Colorado is asking why it wasn't done.

Could have fooled us....Obama making daily speeches about preparedness and recovery by the Federal Government....yet, they didn't have any resources allocated for upstate New York or Vermont.  I guess the govt predictions were a little off....

Gee, I wonder why you didn't defend Bush when the Federal Government made recommendation and warning to evacuate New Orleans? Oh, I get it....the Governor was a Democrat woman. rofllol rofllol rofllol

But Looney Jerk, we can predict fifty years of global warming.....why can't we predict where it's absolutely going to flood in three days?

Michelle Bachmann was right again..... God is sending Vermont a message....

It is not the governments decision to evac city and towns. That is a state decision. Same thing happened in NO during katrina. The mayor and the Gov sat on their asses and acted to late. Then acted like the government did nothing. This is a state problem. They have access to options including their stae NG.
