Are Donor Contributions to the U.N. Smart Investments for the U.S.?

Is the multibillion-dollar U.S. annual payout to the United Nations a good investment? The Obama administration says it is a smart move. The facts, however, suggest otherwise.

The smart investment claim was made most recently by Esther Brimmer, Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs, the branch of State that includes U.N. oversight, during last month’s opening session of the U.N. General Assembly.

While arguing that “the U.N. helps sustain the global economic landscape that U.S. companies depend on,” Brimmer also declared that “the U.N. spends hundreds of millions of dollars every year procuring goods and services from American companies. They spend more money here than in any other country in the world -- more than $1.5 billion last year alone.”

I'm absolutely amazed that no one will weigh in on the subject of the U.N.

I think that the US shoulders too much of the UN's bills, the US ought to look to other nations to provide more funding but lets face it Europe is more broke than we are (at this point in time, Barry may change that but I hope not). Then there are the members from every nation that vote for and against what makes the most sense to keep the peace around the world so the UN can send a force composed of mostly US troops into harms way. Do we need the UN anymore? It would be difficult for the US to pull out of the UN entirely but I think the rest of the world would sit up and take notice if the US began cutting back the funding and troops committed to UN actions around the world.

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

To be fair, the posted article fails to consider the money added to the New York economy by all those diplomats visiting from other countries.

Hotel tax, car rental tax, and keeping poor prostitutes in business as well. It may be a wash.

How about the cost of providing them the facility, cleaning up all of their illegal activities under Diplomatic cover, etc.? They are totally corrupt and all they do is use it as a platform to tear down the U.S., their hosts and benefactors.

The UN should be hosted on a neutral island. You know, so that we could wipe it out in a hurry if we needed to...

Wow, the second time this year that I agree with Tower monkey.

I see absolutely no reason that we continue funding and supporting the U.N. It is corrupt and impotent.

Most of the UN countries would love to move from New York, to a more central location in Europe.

If we stopped funding the Undermining Nations completely that is an immediate savings of over $600 million annually. Then stop funding the money laundering solar companies and we easily have well in excess of one trillion dollars. That goes a long way toward helping our economy.

The silent majority will be silent no more.
