..........."Over the past year, though, Pro Charging has shifted that work and some other assignments back to U.S.-based suppliers. The Tennessee company illustrates a surprising trend — call it a trickle — in which some manufacturers are bringing jobs back to America from Asia. With U.S. jobless rates stubbornly high, it’s part of a welcome reversal fueled by the Chinese economy starting to lose its cost advantages for many products made abroad but bound for final assembly and sale here.

As labor costs rise in China — along with steep fuel and transportation costs to ship merchandise back home — the idea of making goods in the U.S.A. starts to look better to American companies, a recent study by The Boston Consulting Group found. U.S. suppliers also are closing the gap in relative costs by operating more efficiently here.".........

"Reshoring Example: Houston-Based Farouk Systems

From The Financial Times:

"Farouk Shami, chairman and main owner of Houston-based Farouk Systems, made an unorthodox choice when he decided where to expand production of his professional hairdressing equipment. Rather than adding to his existing workforce in Asia, Mr. Shami expanded in Texas.

More of his products now carry the “made in America” label after the decision four years ago to cut back on the work he was giving to subcontractors, based mainly in China and South Korea, in favor of expanding local production."........

NPR reported on the UAW's new deal with Ford Motors, the 2nd tier employees would make about the same as union auto workers in South Korea. sounds like a reason to bring jobs home.

I recently bought a Honda vehicle, which usually means assembled in the states but with foreign(Japanese) components, but mine came with an American transmission and engine.

My older Ford truck had a German motor and a French trainy.

They had a story on this last week. I wish I could find it. It named off all the local products and prices and how the made in China cheaper prices is a myth. It talked about the different toothpastes that are made in different areas and the ones in the US. It was something about how one person CAN make a difference. I will try finding it again.

There is a Georgia company that is actually exporting chopsticks to China so even basic products can be manufactured cheaply.

How about giving those tax breaks to companies that bring manufacturing and production back to the US? Why would the gov't give any breaks to a company shipping jobs overseas?

Because assholes like me would start a short cycle mfg in china and move it home to get breaks because your laws literally told me that was the most sound business decision. If you put a restriction that I have to have mfg in China for 4 years I will buy an older chinese firm going under and have it start re-manufacturing my products so I meet your restrictions. Tell me you have to have the same owner for the 4 years and I will structure it so the Chinese guy is still partner but does not have to do anything but collect some funds for use of his name. No matter what I do, you won't actually know about it, you will just pay higher taxes because I know how to skip mine.

Enough with the breaks. Simplify, breaks complicate and someone will always find a way to fit the new tax saving group.

This is exactly how we created this mess in the first place. Oh and by the way, the bigger my firm, the better positioned I am to take full advantage of the loophole you just created.

I agree! It looks like that is what is part of Rick Perry's flat tax plan that he will be announcing tomorrow.

I say we should demand China cooperates with us, or we stop selling them Chopsticks! LOL

"Today, U.S. manufacturers provide about 75% of the products that Americans consume," the study says. "But that number could soar to 95% within a few years if business and government leaders take the right actions. Conversely, if the sector remains neglected, that output could fall by half, meeting less than 40% of U.S. demand."
