Existentially cool..... (dude)

So - I give a student a ride to campus (as I often do) - and I finally ran into the kind of students that politicians love to make an example of.

I pull over and pick the student up - it's cold outside, and he'd likely appreciate a ride to campus.

(student) --- awesome dude
(me) --- uh oh.... Hey --- how you doing?
(student) existentially cool (eyes staring off to god knows where)
(me) glad to hear that - hey - what do you study here?
(student) I'm interested in the institutionalized alienation of individuality and creativity from the industrialized establishment
(me - thinking --- uh oh.... ) political science?
(student) hell no -- politics sucks - I study sociology.

Frankly (thank goodness) - we don't have that many like this. Were I to guess, I'd say this student will head up a branch of Leo Burnett one day - and will personally oversee institutionalized fabrication of alternate realities (i.e. - marketing)........

No... I'd say that this student will graduate college, be unable to find work, will Occupy something and whine how he/she can't get meaningful employment.

Eventually - they grow up.

Look at Stewart Brand.

In the 70s, he was passing out acid.

Now, he writes for the Global Business Network and consults with Shell.

Really... look at the scum on the streets of Occupy encampments masquerading as grown ups.

I don't really have a lot of warm and fuzzy thoughts about the OWS crowd.

However - most individuals eventually grow up, and find a productive role in the workforce.

You protest the madness for a time - then embrace it.

Most people eventually figure out that a stable job, insurance, and retirement plans are good ideas.

I think it's funny, they do it to be apart of the "happening" and most don't even know what's happening.

He's obviously channeling Keanu...nothing wrong with that! lol

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill
