http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-573 ... 6-sticker/

Company wears stickers saying how many days since accident.
Christian gets worried when they get over 600, expresses concerns about having to wear a 666.
Boss says don't worry, you wont be forced.
They were safe, he didn't wear it, 3 days suspended and then fired.

issues.

1. Why didn't he just cut his finger the day before and call it good?
2. Why didn't they just fire him for something else and avoid the publicity?
3. Why did they make such a big deal about a sticker?
4. In the end, I think it is up to the company owner. People get fired for all kinds of things, they are only there to help the boss and if the boss doesn't want them, there is nothing to debate, though this does seem silly. Company belongs to boss, employee can now start his own firm with no sticker requirements for employees, but still silly.

Figure this one will make people's paths cross a little, people wining about jobs being a right, bosses having rights, religion not being required or restricted, profit, who is really in charge of who and for what reason and to what extent.

In the end I feel for the guy, but I say tough, he really should have faked a minor accident and he would be much happier this week.

If the story is accurate it seems the company is at fault to me.

The guy was first told he didn't need to wear the sticker. Then he was told he'd get a few days suspension. But instead, they fired him.

Seems like there is more to it because it sounds like they fired him over nothing important after completely misleading him.

And why make employees even wear the sticker? Don't they usually have a big sign instead to show how many days without an injury they've had?

I don't know if there is any cause for a lawsuit here, but I hate hearing about people losing their job over something dumb like this.

Well, there you have it... All he had to do was wear the patch upside-down...

"I hate hearing about people losing their job over something dumb like this."

So do I... But in this case, "dumb" is in the eye of the beholder... It sounds to me like the guy had the option not to make a big deal out of it...and the employer had the option to head off a problem before it happened. If they had hit "666", and there were no more accidents for a few months, the guy was going to have to make a decision to wear the patch or be furloughed until they hit "667"... (Of course, he also had the option to accidentally cut himself or something on the day it hit '666' to force it over...) I wish the guy well in his superstition, but you guys are always so supportive of employer's rights to "fire at-will"... Well, here it is....

Or do like tall buildings do, and just not have an official 13th floor. Go from Day 665 to 667.

I used to work at a place where the employees set 666 as the access code. One religious woman had to make the sign of the cross every time she punched it in. More superstitious?

The fact that they gave him a three suspension says it all. Work place was wrong in a million different ways and it does not matter what the man believed or if it was seen as ridiculous. This was such a small thing and the worker should not be forced to feel uncomfortable.

Posteryoyo, you are right this has 285 courthouse written all over it. I am looking forward to this discussion.

Seems like there's a lot of dumb on both sides of this. IMO if the employee feels that strongly about it, hey! Take the day off - take a vacation day or call in sick or schedule a dr. appt. or whatever. You keep your job, don't piss off HR and don't have to wear a silly tag. On the company side, talk about over-reaction! It's a STICKER, for gods sake! Get over it!

There are probably a lot of people who would wear the sticker or anything else just to have the job.

Of course, this story only has his side of it. My guess would be that this guy caused more problems than this if he made a stink about wearing a sticker and this was the last straw. He could have taken a sick day and avoided this, but he went to work anyway, maybe to broadcast his religion or have an opportunity at a lawsuit?

Suggesting that the worker take a sick day, whenever he is not sick, is asking him to lie. This would say "A sin to stop a great sin is not a sin at all." A deeply moral, religous person would not lie about being sick to avoid wearing the 666 sticker.

Silly you.
