A Reagan Legacy: Amnesty For Illegal Immigrants

05 Jul 2010 19:58 #11 by archer
There is no ethics in being illegal....illegal is illegal, period. I don't think anyone is debating that point.....but please, blaming the illegal immigration issue on Democrats looking for votes, is silly. The jobs are here......employers take advantage of the cheap labor....and so they continue to come. Until we can actually close the border and stop employers from hiring them, they will continue to come.

If we should find a way to stop the flow, if we can stop employers from hiring illegals....then what? what do we do with the millions already here that we do not have the resources to round up and send home? What suggestions does the right have for dealing with these millions of people? Practical suggestions anyone?

Would you feel differently if they all promised to vote Republican?

I'd feel better if they spoke English first, put away the Mexican flag second, paid taxes third, paid a fine fourth, exempted from public services fifth until citizens, lastly, gain citizenship over a period of time based upon completion of fine payment and a civics course taught in English, ....they figure out they are Republican later. (I think that was a Reagan quote).

It was sold as a crackdown: There would be tighter security at the Mexican border, and employers would face strict penalties for hiring undocumented workers.

But the bill also made any immigrant who'd entered the country before 1982 eligible for amnesty — a word not usually associated with the father of modern conservatism.

In his renewed push for an immigration overhaul this week, President Obama called for Republican support for a bill to address the growing population of illegal immigrants in the country. This time, however, Republicans know better than to tread near the politically toxic A-word.

Wayne,

Most conservatives understand that the A-word is the most likely course of action for many of the illegals who are residing in America. However, the 1982 Democrat Congress amnesty program signed by Reagan was to prohibit what has happen over the past 20 years - more illegal immigration. It didn't. It fueled more illegal immigration. Mexican immigrated in hopes of another amnesty program and by shear numbers it will probably take place. The lack of enforcement by both sides of the 1982 Democrat Congress program proves what most conservatives are saying today. Without full border security, the upcoming "reform" will do nothing more but "ignite" more illegal immigration.

Go pound sand.

Care to point out what positive steps the republican congresses and administrations have done for border security and to stem the flow of illegals.......get real, neither party wants to touch this with a 10 foot pole. They just pass it on, and on, and on.

Archer,

I am sorry to say....we are in agreement. Both parties have failed...the incumbents will pay this November.

To that end, we must continue to push for border security. Without it amnesty does nothing more than legalize the illegals...and encourage more immigration of poor, illiterate individuals.

This is what I have been advocating since day one of these discussions......you cannot address the illegal issue until you close the border. Period. All the laws the states can think of passing, like AZ's new law, will accomplish nothing unless the flow is stopped. As a country we need to concentrate on that.....then decide how to handle those already here.

2 wrongs do not make a right, it was wrong then and it's wrong now.
