Congress overturns incandescent light bulb ban

There they go again... wasting valuable legiststrative time on silly issues...

Congressional negotiators struck a deal Thursday that overturns the new rules that were to have banned sales of traditional incandescent light bulbs beginning next year.

That agreement is tucked inside the massive 1,200-page spending bill that funds the government through the rest of this fiscal year, and which both houses of Congress will vote on Friday. Mr. Obama is expected to sign the bill, which heads off a looming government shutdown.

Congressional Republicans dropped almost all of the policy restrictions they tried to attach to the bill, but won inclusion of the light bulb provision, which prevents the Obama administration from carrying through a 2007 law that would have set energy efficiency standards that effectively made the traditional light bulb obsolete.

The bill doesn’t actually amend the 2007 law, but does prohibit the administration from spending any money to carry out the light bulb standards — which amounts to at least a temporary reprieve.

And I stocked up on a 3 years supply of candles. Now what am I going to do with that many candles?

Just another example of where government was trying to dictate how you need to live your life. Thank goodness that this issue has temporarily fallen by the way side. If it were to become law, can you envision its enforcement? Law officers have a right to come into your house whenever the wish to see if your lights meet federal legislated standards.

That's not as unlikely as it may seem. Just look at the increase of 'trash police' over the last few years.

Hooray! Now the consumer can decide for themselves! What a concept - a decision in favor of a free market!

seriously, I think it was only for the 100 watt bulbs.

here's an observation of mine: I am not finding florescent bulbs lasting the 10 years or so as they claim. Any other experiences?

The first ones I bought were back around 1994 and I did have one lasted about 10 years. But, they we're the tubular (European) design that was, because of it's long shape, difficult to use in common table lamps. And they were pretty expensive.

Today I do have some reservations about the CFL's due to the mercury content. And with a home that is cool almost all year, I don't have an issue with incandescent bulbs creating some heat.
