What is your opinion and is it true?

I don’t want to get involved into a political debate and I don’t know enough about it (and politics for that matter) anyways, but I am thinking this is important enough for some attention on 285bound. I would like to see what people have to say.

This is an ugly, ugly thing. Tantamount to martial law as far as I'm concerned.

The awful atrocity of Sept. 11th 2001 ALTERED all that we knew......the degrading of civil liberties accelerated from that point forward.
What is the saying? Those who give up liberties for perceived security are fooling themselves(paraphrase).....it has ALL come home to

Evidently his "serious reservations" weren't serious enough to make him veto this bill. Once again, the Political Class is more concerned with how much power they can accumulate. There is no one in Washington representing us anymore.

Those that voted for ANYONE that is entrenched in Washington. Obama is only one piece of the political puzzle. The Political Class + Criminal Corporations + The Rich Elite = plutocracy, kleptocracy and the rape and pillage of this country. Get off your partisan high horse and start realizing that no party is working for YOU!

Most of those items in the Defense Bill, are pretty much already part of our laws in this country. Congress has authority to suspend habeas corpus. It almost goes hand in hand with a declaration of Martial Law. There have been instances where that has been declared or some form of it. Hurricane Katrina was the last one. Federal and National Guard troops were called in due to lack of civil law authority. The Military acted in place of the civil police force. Article 1 Section 9 is where you can find it in the Constitution but it states

The privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it."

IMO this falls right into the same column as the new Defense Bill. Not much different. It is understood that Congress can only declare Martial Law and they are the only ones that can suspend Habeas Corpus. That said it has been proven in the past that Governor's of states can also do it. Idaho Governor did it and so did the Louisiana Governor (though in Louisiana it is called a " state of public health emergency"

Ok K R, but every instance erodes what our founders fought/insisted upon. And each time the people accept more loss at the idea of more saftey which is a farce.
