Just like the assessor is not allowed on my properties, I don't want another fuel delivery guy or power provider trapsing around like they have a right to be there either or some gas company employee walking through my house to turn off valves without asking. I also don't like loosing my resources randomly (like loosing power, can't remember the last time that happened). For me it is about having my place be mine and not needing you or anyone else to do anything to make it work after I set it up and trade to get the parts and pieces. I know, being off grid means I can't grow MMJ like a real Coloradan, but I get by.

I'm glad it works for you... or in the least... you make it work. It can, on an individual basis, with proper planning (and many times having the financial where with all). An interesting article on how it can work...
Why you don't need solar panels
When people learn that I am a green building consultant, almost without exception, they ask me if I do a lot of work with solar power, which I don’t. I don’t install many solar power systems, either photovoltaic (the kind that creates electricity) or thermal (the kind that creates hot water). I have been accused of being anti-solar because I often discourage people from focusing on PV on their homes, at least until they have done everything else to save energy, which they rarely bother to do.
Like I mention above, I'm not against renewable energy. But I am against pipe dreams and throwing money at something that currently is not supported by the underlying science and research. There are some amazing technological advancements that have been made in the last 40 years. Let's focus on those advancements and supporting the science and research. When the time is right, when the technology is ready... big "evil" business will be all over it.
