What burning Qurans in Afghanistan tells us

That it's past time to get out.

I'm kinda surprised that no one's brought this story up here. This is depressing - have we learned nothing of respect for other cultures and to not cause more problems for ourselves? There is no excuse for burning a holy book of any kind.

What burning Qurans in Afghanistan tells us
After 10 years, US troops still fail to understand the local culture, and Afghans are tired of the occupation.

We don't know yet why, exactly, a group of US soldiers at Bagram Air Base were burning Qurans and other Islamic religious texts a few days ago. Ignorance? Carelessness? A group of soldiers that wanted to express contempt for the faith (a view that's far from uncommon among soldiers and marines)?

The "why" doesn't really matter though.

With hundreds of thousands of young soldiers and inexperienced officers cycling through war zones over a decade, these sorts of things are the types of things that happen from time to time in war – just as the desecration of the bodies of dead Taliban happened and will likely happen from time to time, just as a poorly-led unit enraged at the loss of a comrade carried out a massacre and will likely happen from time to time.

That these things happen in war, and undermine missions that have been framed in terms of winning over local populations, is as predictable as the rain. As is the Afghan response to the Quran building yesterday and today.

The reasoning given in this article seems extreme, but I don't doubt that it is part of it, and that nothing will be done to solve the problem.
Mass Burnings of Korans at Bagram Fuel Anti-Americanism
Friday 2 March 2012
by: Michael L. Weinstein

This unthinkable sequence of events has proven fatal, first and foremost, to Americans serving in Afghanistan. As of this writing, six US troops have been killed by allied Afghan security forces, while seven were injured in a grenade attack launched by civilian protesters. On Thursday, two Americans were killed at a joint NATO-Afghan National Army base by a group of Afghans, including an allied soldier. This past weekend, two senior American military officers were shot and killed within the Interior Ministry in Kabul by an Afghan colleague, who was allegedly provoked, according to Afghan government sources, by the Americans' open mockery of the protests.

you would think that after 10 years of occupation, everyone would understand the culture better than this.

The way I understood it was the despoiled Korans were thrown in the garbage and then the garbage was burned. It was a culturally insensitive move, but I also think Islam needs to be more forgiving of other people's mistakes. It is almost like they are emotionally imature.
i know I wouldn't be very offended if bibles used to exchange messages were burned by mistake.

SC and Wily, I think the answer to both of you is embeded in SC's post.

"With hundreds of thousands of young soldiers and inexperienced officers cycling through war zones over a decade"......

Training and briefings only go so far when you are put into a was zone on the other side of the world.

I'm not in favor of burning any book, while I don't always agree with everything everyone has written but I feel that books are vessels of knowledge that span the ages. I'm sure there is more to know about how this incident came to pass, if the Qurans were being used to pass messages then I would think that there would be a standing order to confiscate them and review them for intelligence purposes. One of the unfortunate consequences of being a prisoner is that your personal belongings are confiscated and may not be returned. The result is a large collection of pocket litter and other personal effects that have no value and are taking up space that could be better utilized.

How about DoD personnel burning Bibles?

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

Respect other cultures? Similar to how the Afghans respected another culture whenever they blew up the ancient Buddha statues which were carved into a mountainside many centuries ago?

That type of respect?

When did we aspire to be no better than the Afghans?

My opinion on this

We had some guys that were cleaning the offices where these books where and mistook them for trash that had to be burned. Now at the burn area they have locals that assist with this effort so why did they not stop it before it even took place.

As for punishment for them soldiers, or as Karsai and his cronies want, turn them over to them for proper trial, not just no but hell no. Sit them down explain to them what they did, and why it was improper that is the end of it. We are sending 18,19 and 20 year old soldier sailors, marines and airmen over there putting them into combat and expect them to be perfect. They are not, They made a mistake, the bigger question that should be asked is why were these books left out if they were deemed a security issue. They should have been locked up where only those that had a need could access them. But to punish them, HELL NO. They deserve no punishment. And the President running his mouth about it, saying those that did it will be punished. Not his decision to start with. Its called the UCMJ. I do not remember seeing anything in there about book burning.

So, it's OK to deface a holy book with messages in a prison, but not OK to get rid of said book that has been defaced. In other words, it's OK for us to do it, but not for the infidels to do it.

Yes, we should have gotten out of there sometime back. They'll want us again when the Taliban take over and start the mass hangings in the soccer fields.
