I have to question the joint services, all-in one design strategy. Never been done before. I wonder if it was pushed by Lockheed Martin or by the DOD? Supposed to save money in the long run by commonality, but so far the costs are thru the roof. :)

I do not remember the details but I believe it was caused by inter service infighting at the Pentagon.
