"Today, coal still generates more than half of Pennsylvania’s electrical power, according to Edward Yankovich, United Mine Workers District II vice president. “In Ohio, 80 percent,” he added.
Yet it is the one energy resource about which President Obama dares not speak. In fact, Obama has not mentioned it since last year — and then, only in passing at a news conference.
Last Thursday, in what the White House touted as his “big American-made energy” speech, the president never mentioned coal.
“That’s — that is just disappointing,” said T.J. Rooney, former chairman of Pennsylvania Democrats, who oversaw several very successful election cycles for his party."
And in Colorado, coal fired power plants have been scrapped and replaced with natural gas. And utility cusstomers got to pay for the unnecessary changeover.:

Sounds like they need to coordinate these clean air upgrades, and allow deviations and waivers instead of arbitrary deadlines in 2015. I'm ok with new construction being nuclear and natural gas, but shutting down 100s of coal plants that still have useful life sounds unnecessary without a plan for taking up the slack.
If you want to be, press one. If you want not to be, press 2
Republicans are red, democrats are blue, neither of them, gives a flip about you.

Japan has replaced all their nuclear energy with petrol and coal fired power plants and pollution is increasing dramatically.
Back to Obama, we will consider all energy, except coal?

Um, I live in CO and did not pay for this (unless you a---hol--s taxed me for your power in some other good or general tax)? Just like being self employed, you can make your own power with known costs, lower than the grid over a relatively short period of time. Don't argue this you will loose, your numbers will be wrong, it works and is not expensive.
Just another debate for those that like being under someone thumb and think the the whole world in under the thumb with you.
Obama is just the president, the coal is owned by people and companies, it is being used to make power, people want power, we feel secure because the nation has a decent supply of coal, but actually since it is the US it is not the nation, it is companies and they can even be foreign companies owning it, we hope the companies will not eventually sell it to foreign people....Sounds like the relatively free market has found ways to harvest, distribute and use coal. Even if Chinese companies own it, all we have to do is pay the market price and I bet they will sell the coal back to us for domestic use. I don't see a role for the president when something already works. I don't see the need for him to talk about it, I want him to address high level federal issues that cannot be resolved by citizens, states or other aspects of the fed.
If you want to talk about pollution and global warming, well use less of this crap, don't wait for Obama to force you to.
We are off the grid, combination of solar, propane generator and battery bank. Intial start up costs were huge, but over the years it has paid off and we had little option since we are 4 miles from the nearest utility line and very expensive to bring over the hill through wilderness area.

And help our national security and debt all at the same time!

Very cool FH. And those initial costs are only going to come down; once installed, they start making your money back. Makes sense to me to do, whether you have to or not.
