Billy Carter was a real gem too...

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

Billy was a good old boy! He was a brother, not a son. That was back in the country craze of the '70's where he fit right in.

Neil Bush, now that guy was a real peach.

It's kind of a shame that some people want to deny the president's kids the opportunity to travel with their classmates just because they have to have secret service protection (that goes with the territory when you are the president's kid, and all of them get it)......my daughter went twice to Mexico on school sponsored trips when she was at the Jefferson County Open School. Both trips were vary valuable learning experiences for her. I guess if I was famous others would want to deny her that opportunity. What a bunch of jealous busy bodies we have here......

You are aware that the kids get SS protection when they go to school too? Are you suggesting Obama pull his kids out of school too? the pettiness here is pretty disgusting. If we ever do get a Republican president, will you feel the same way? How many kids does Romney have? You know they will get secret service protection too? Bush even extended the secret service protection for his daughters when he left the White House beyond what is customary. ( http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162- ... 03544.html ) Are you all outraged by that too?????? It certainly doesn't bother me, I think it's important that we protect the first family along with the president while still allowing them to have a life outside the White House.

Perchance you are taking this story much more seriously than I am? To be more serious, considering how dangerous Mexico has become, it only makes sense for a a couple teams of SS agents accompany them. Imagine if a drug cartel kidnapped the President's daughter and her classmates? Regular teenagers are much less likely to be kidnapped than Obama's kin.

It was an annual school trip.

First off, the "25 secret service agents" is bogus. The White House NEVER discusses security set-ups or details, so whoever came up with that figure is guessing or flat-out making it up. The right-wing blogosphere is just repeating it without any sort of verification. The Blaze even went further, calling them "25 of our best Secret Service agents." The 25 number apparently originated from Rick Santorum during an interview with Glenn Beck.

How many are assigned to Malia? All the Secret Service will say is "The appropriate number to get the job done." The agents are already on the government payroll. They would be paid the same if they are protecting Malia or chasing suspected counterfeiters.

Regarding the school trip (painted in various right-wing blogs as "a wild Spring break in Mexico with her friends" which makes it sound like they are partying down on the beach somewhere...)

Malia, 13, attends Sidwell Friends School in Washington, which has been organizing trips to Oaxaca for years, said Ellis Turner, the associate head of school, who pointed out that there was no State Department travel warning for Oaxaca.

The school trip to Oaxaca allows students to volunteer at an orphanage. Along with their work at the orphanage, which Mr. Turner did not identify, the teenagers trooped through all the tourist spots in Oaxaca, a handsome colonial city set in a blue-green valley steeped in pre-Columbian culture. They toured Zapotec archaeological sites and visited nearby villages famous for producing black pottery and fantastical wood carvings called alebrijes.

Glad we could clear this up.

You're welcome.

But if this story keeps just one person from voting for Obama in November it was worth it!

Story? You mean fabrication. If that's the only way the Republicans can win in November, it says a lot about them.

The standard conservative thought behind coming up with daily made-up outrages. Paraphrased, throw mud against the wall and see what sticks. He's a Muslim, he's gay, he's a communist, he's a racist, he's not a citizen, his wife orders lobster on the taxpayer's dime, his kid partied in Mexico on Spring break.

Thanks for being so honest about your intentions.
