Starting next year, New York will become the first state to require lawyers to perform unpaid work before being licensed to practice, the state’s chief judge announced on Tuesday, describing the rule as a way to help the growing number of people who cannot afford legal services.
It would be nice to see new MDs donate some volunteer time to low income community clinics too, and maybe get a break on their student loans as incentives. I think some states do that too. Of course they need some experienced Docs too working along side the greenhorns. Same for lawyers.
If you want to be, press one. If you want not to be, press 2
Republicans are red, democrats are blue, neither of them, gives a flip about you.

Sure why not. Have them practice on those who cannot afford legal services.
Any supervision involved? Good idea Joe - experienced with the greenhorns.

Well NY is where the money is, so I don't see a problem with having to pay a premium as long as it's the state making that rule and not the gubment. Good idea on them helping the poor get a better lawyer than one that may be a complacent and less accountable gubment one.
The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.
That is the real question, which one is worse a greenhorn with no experience or a gubment one? Pity the poor people either way.

Should all professions have similar requirements? Or should we have compulsory national service as some countries already have? Such as 2 years after high school either in some sort of military service and non-military service?

Nope - that's involuntary servitude and it's prohibited by our Constitution.
My question becomes if they do not yet have a license to practice law, are they permitted by law to dispense or provide legal advice/services? Seems to me if you go around practicing law without a license there are some penalties for doing that.

Most law schools provide a legal clinic for 3rd year students that allow individuals to practice for legal aid clients under the supervision of lawyers/law professors. I think both DU and CU have one. these are typically simple contract disputes, writing wills, simple divorces, etc. It provides the students with practical experience and low income individuals access to legal counsel. It is up to the court systems to decide if those students can actually appear in court.
My guess in NY the lawyers to be will have to be supervised under some legal aid clinic. e
In regard to the involuntary servitude, why does the federal government have the authority to force individuals into military service against their will? Could the government simply institute a mandatory draft of all individuals and give the option of non-military service if desired? I believe that they allowed conscientious objectors that option.
