"Why immigration reform should take its cue from reality
The Sunday Washington Post featured a thoughtful article about illegal immigration by Roberto Suro. Suro argues that we make a big mistake by viewing illegal immigrants as either (a) candidates for deportation or (b) future citizens.
I agree. We cannot deport our way to a sound immigration policy. In my view, large-scale deportation would be impractical, harmful to the economy, and inhumane. But providing illegal immigrants with a path to citizenship would reward illegal conduct and provide a huge incentive for much more of it.
Current policy on illegal immigration is widely viewed as broken, and in some respects it is. ".......................
Do you have a url for that article? I'd like to read it.
It's a tough problem. To me deportation is not only impractical but logistically impossible. And what of the kids of illegals who have been here all their lives and know no other country? I agree also that a path to citizenship would provide huge incentive for more illegals.
I think the feds need to continue to enforce the current policy, but I also think we need to make some changes. By taking away the economic incentive for illegals to come here many will not bother to come.
No to immigration reform unless it means sending them back and securing our borders. I don't care if they are from Mexico, Iran, etc. Do it right according to law. Encouraging others to break the law and then rewarding them is not the answer.
Sorry charlie, my brethren from Mexico and from Ecuador where I have just returned know that nothing will happen to them if they come here. When they understand differently they will look elsewhere or figure out how to make things happen in their own country.

Immigration is a tough issue, no easy cures. Do we really want to spend the money to lock up and send back millions of workers?
I think it makes the most sense to penalize business for hiring illegals. If they can't find jobs, they will self deport themselves.
The young ones born here without papers? Very tough. Send them back to Mexico who doesn't want them? Maybe a modified DREAM Act that trades citizenship for public service. This could be VISTA, the military, helping out in VA hospitals and elder care places.

I agree with most of what you said except for the self deportation part. There's always going to be under the table cash jobs from struggling businesses and individuals who want cheap labor. Then add the fact that they can get free health care, free schools, discounted college, etc. Mexico is stinking rat hole of crime and corruption. You could make a much better living here just holding a sign on a busy street corner.
We can't send them all back, but we can plug the whole if we were just serious about it. Once the whole is plugged, we can then deport the criminals as they pop up...and they will.
The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.
Latest numbers saw illegal Mexican immigration is down because their economy is improving. Most of the new illegal immigrants are arriving from Central America so self-deportion is somewhat successful.
