Papa John's Founder Warns That Obamacare Will Lead to Imperceptably Small Increase in Pizza Prices
As a New Yorker born and raised, I can't officially approve of national chain pizzas. But if you must order one, Papa John's is clearly the best. And the chain's CEO, John Schnatter, is not only raising money for Mitt Romney, he's warning that Obamacare will cause your pizza-eating experience to suffer:
On a conference call last week, CEO and founder John Schnatter (a Mitt Romney supporter and fundraiser) said the health care law's changes — set to go into effect in 2014 — will result in higher costs for the company — which they vowed to pass onto consumers.
"Our best estimate is that the Obamacare will cost 11 to 14 cents per pizza, or 15 to 20 cents per order from a corporate basis," Schnatter said.
Stipulating for a moment that this is true, doesn't it seem like a rather small price to pay? Papa John's website is currently offering to deliver me a large pepperoni pizza for $14.08 and Schnatter is warning me that the problem with Obamacare is ... a one-time price increase of less than 1 percent! That seems eminently reasonable. What's more, it's well within the range of the kind of price swings Papa John's is going to have to expect just based on the vagaries of the weather, which impacts the price of ingredients, and the ups and downs of the oil market. There's just nothing there.
Everyone will have to skimp on that extra topping. No more jalapenos for them. This will plunge jalapeno farmers into bankruptcy, which will put John Deere sales in the dumpster and they will have to shut down plants, causing the State of Illinois to declare a debt default.
Butterfly effect.

Papa Johns already offers health insurance and many other bennies to employees, even part-timers. So the delta price increase is probably only complying with the new regs and added Obamacare mandated benefits at the corp. level. Heck, these dudes get better bennies than I do, think I may go apply. Pizza discounts too! WhooHoooo!

Since most everything costs more each year, it's hard for me to get upset about it.
As the article points out, a drought can drive up pizza prices even more, because of the increased costs of vegetables.
When the ACA forces added costs to businesses who sell goods and services, the extra cost will be passed to the consumer... and when taxes go up for them, the prices will go up for us. WE always pay the bill for added regulation and taxes either directly or in lost jobs.
