On his show Wednesday night, The Daily Show host Jon Stewart ripped apart the voter ID laws being pushed by Republicans in swing states this year.
Conservatives have described voter fraud as a “serious threat to democracy.” But even the National Republican Lawyers Association, which supports voter ID laws, was only able to find 340 cases of voter fraud over a ten year period.
“Oh, my god. That’s almost .7 cases per state per year,” Stewart said. “And it also includes registration fraud, registering the wrong address, writing Mickey Mouse on a petition — which voter ID would not address.”
Stewart noted that attorneys for Pennsylvania, which is now defending its voter ID law in court, said they were not aware of any cases of in-person voter fraud in the state. They also admitted they had no evidence that voter fraud would occur in the November elections without a voter ID law.
So? Americans have spoken and think it is reasonable to have a picture ID on you when you vote. Do you know anyone without a photo ID? The people without photo ID are a very small suspect class anyway.
Thomas Sowell: There are no solutions, just trade-offs.
A small "suspect" class? What the hell does that mean? Students who don't have a drivers license? The elderly? He disabled? The poor? Minorities? What exactly are they suspected of?
They showed one of the Dem's big examples of a disenfrachised veteran! This senior citizen wasn't allowed to vote because he didn't have photo ID. Oh no, he had actually just left his photo ID at home, in his senior citizen community where the polling place was. So all he had to do was go across the street to get it.
Oh no, the inhumanity!
Thomas Sowell: There are no solutions, just trade-offs.
325 cases of voter fraud in 10 years across all 50 states. let's see that averages to 32.5 cases a year across 50 states, so 32.5 divided by 50. OK HERE IT IS: .65 (less than ONE HUMAN) cases of voter fraud per state. Yeah that sounds like a good thing to spend tax payer's money on.
source? Republican national lawyers assoc.
seriously, why is this money being spent when so many states are having a hard time balancing their budgets? Oh wait, it is only in the "swing states" that have a Rep. majority - if you can't win honestly, then cheat. The only cheaters here are those trying to suppress votes. That is wrong.
Every law abiding American citizen has the right to expect that their elections are conducted in a manner that is free from fraud and corruption. I have an individual right to expect that my county and state have taken the proper measures to insure clean elections.
We do not have this now. The only way to protect this expectation is to have a mechanism in place in order to give the electorate some assurance that people who should not be voting- are in fact excluded from voting.
We have no way of telling exactly how many votes were fradulant- and that is the problem with the claims such as this- that voter fraud is not a problem.
How do they know- the fact is that they do not know how many votes were fraudulant- and they will never know until a proper mechanism is in place.
Will I be able to get my free Obamacare without an ID?
I hope it's as free and easy to get a doctor as it is to vote - without any ID!
