for turning down Biden

August 16, 2012 | 2:51 pm

Secret Service officers associated with Vice President Joe Biden bought a pile of cupcakes from the baker who refused to host Biden at his shop — and they did so out of gratitude.

It’s a startling news nugget at the bottom of a local report. “hortly after Crumb and Get It told Biden’s advance people ‘no’ — the secret service walked in and told [owner] Chris McMurray ”Thanks for standing up and saying ‘no’ — then they bought a whole bunch of cookies and cupcakes,” according to the Valley Reporter (Va.).

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

When you read that story, does it make you wonder if something's not quite right about it? Joe's Secret Service detail doing something that could easily be traced back to them?

I just got a call from Max Milien, a spokesman for the United States Secret Service. He told me unequivocally, “our personnel were not involved in making that statement.” Milien said there were agents in the bakery, along with (similarly dressed) local law enforcement, but that USSS was there merely to thank the shop owners for their trouble and apologize for any inconvenience the advance team may have caused them.

Or you could hear it from the guy who said no:

Radford business owner declines request from Joe Biden's entourage to stop in store

The owner of Crumb and Get It says he doesn't agree with the Obama administration's policies.

I was there was a youtube version of this video, you'll have to go here instead: http://www.wdbj7.com/news/wdbj7-radford-business-owner-declines-joe-bidens-request-to-stop-in-store-20120815,0,4370357.story

RADFORD, Va.—

"Crumb and Get It" in Radford had to shut down at 1:15 p.m. Thursday because they ran out of food.

Would you say no to the Vice President?

One New River Valley business owner turned Vice President Joe Biden down. To see video of the story, click here.

This might happen more than you think from both political parties, most businesses just don't talk about it. The owner of "Crumb and Get It" - did.

Chris McMurray's bakery has been open only since May, barely three months.

Wednesday morning, advance teams for Vice President Joe Biden walked in.

"I approached her she said Joe Biden is coming to town today," McMurray said.

"Crumb and Get It" is a mom and pop store. Literally. Chris and his wife Kelly run the place and need all the business they can get.

McMurray said the Vice President's entourage got to the point and made its pitch.

"She said they have selected 'Crumb and Get It" to be his stop on his way to Blacksburg and was wondering if that was ok."

Here's the part that might make other business owners crazy.

"This is an opportunity of a lifetime but essentially I said 'No offense to you or the campaign but I just decline you guys coming in here. At that time she said 'Are you sure? There's going to be a lot of press, a lot of activity,’" McMurray said.

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

I have no doubt he said no. What didn't sound right was the VP's Secret Service detail coming in and thanking him for it.

I guess you had to be there.

The two sides that were there have different stories. One has an ax to grind. I'll go with the SS.

I can't see them walking around with cupcakes.

You might want to do a little research on the demographics of the USSS, not every agent is male, 6'3", and 250 lbs of whoop-ass. The USSS employs many very capable female agents who don't stick out in a crowd, there's a reason for that.

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

And that has WHAT to do with the VP's detail walking around with cupcakes?

I didn't mean it as a comment on males. I meant it as a comment on the professionalism of the Secret Service. They don't walk around with things in their hands.

"Chris the Baker" wouldn't have happened if Biden's people went to shop next door

“Chris the Baker” saying no to Vice President Joe Biden is getting loads of national attention.

This happened during a campaign stop in Radford on Wednesday and it's a story we first brought you on WDBJ7.

What a difference 37 feet would have made; instead of a photo op with Chris, a Republican supporter, Biden could have met up with a die-hard Democrat, just a few yards away.

The business is called Cafe 24. It's a mom and pop store, just like "Crumb and Get It", next door.

The difference is the owner of Cafe 24 tells me he loves Vice President Joe Biden. If only the VP's advance team had walked 37 feet the other way.

The past 24 hours at Cafe 24 in Radford have been a huge political disappointment for proud Democrat Jeramy Guillory. His restaurant was passed over by Vice President Biden.

"Absolutely it was a missed opportunity definitely. We would have loved to have him in here," Guillory said

His wife and kids wait on tables, help in the kitchen, and love the Vice President.

I don't care how "Chris the Baker" came to be, I wish him all the best regardless of the veracity of the USSS's actual involvement.

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

Oh, silly me. I forgot that anything that someone says or does with even a remotely negative connotation toward Obama is earth-shatteringly important.

To conservatives.
