Briefly, racism to me is thinking another race is less than yours. That can take many forms, including jokes and comments.

Not just thinking it, but taking some form of speech or action to further those thoughts. I also believe that a major point of distinction here is the POV. The conservatives here look at their POV in those thoughts or actions while the progressives here look at the POV of those receiving the thoughts or actions.

So, if the comment about the poker was made with only the thought "Something hot would get him to jump fast" rather than "Brand that black guy like they did the slaves" it's not racism?

It's just the thoughts of superiority of skin color behind the comment that counts?

I don't agree with that completely - it seems to me that you've put the racism on the receiver rather than the sender.

Why do I feel like that is a trick question? haha

Yes, if Barbour meant it as "something hot would get him to jump fast" not realizing some could interpret it as something more sinister and a way to put Obama in his "place." I think that's why he apologized. That just my opinion though. Doesn't mean it's correct.

I see it the same way.

How far do we all need to go to ensure that nothing we say can be taken as offensive by someone else?

wait... ensure... could that be taken as ageism? :)

Here is my suggestion, just like you would do with friends and acquaintances you ask what they meant and if they say, "oh I did not realize it could be taken that way" then you believe them and let it go. This is about people jumping all over anything they can to make others look bad. It is dead wrong. And opportunistic.

Is there anything that people won't do, and this causes arguments that make no sense. It has become win at all costs including self respect. I gotta be able to sleep at night and I live my life that way.

:like:

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.
