Anyone here going to watch Revolution?

I watch very few shows, but because of the principles involved, this one is intriguing - I can't wait to see where their imaginations take us! I'm already a little annoyed at the crappy science though and expect better of Favreau and Abbrams - the idea of cars shutting down mid-drive and planes "falling out of the sky" just because all electricity goes bye-bye, uh-uh. They run on fuel and batteries and no electromagnetic pulse is big enough to cover the entire globe.

Our entire way of life depends on electricity. So what would happen if it just stopped working?

From director Jon Favreau ("Iron Man," "Iron Man 2") and the fertile imaginations of J.J. Abrams and Eric Kripke ("Supernatural"), comes a surprising "what if" action-adventure series, where an unlikely hero will lead the world out of the dark. Literally.

- NBC Revolution debuts Monday, September 17th - 2012.-

Nope. Seems to be an apocalyptic soap opera from the previews. Didn't really captrue my interest.

Definitely agree, and that is perhaps one reason I probably won't watch the show. The wife keeps looking for something I'll actually sit down and watch with her, and this one came into discussion but at the same time she knows I have little tolerance for Hollywood's fascination with displaying unintelligence. :faint:

Could understand using somewhat primitive/archaic weapons and tools for some people, but its more entertaining to me to see how people overcome the challenges and return a sense of normality through ingenuity.

This part is kind of what I'm hoping they delve into more (although I'm not opposed to the mind-candy that soap operas provide either  - they serve their purpose of letting me shut off my brain for a short while and just enjoy). These guys have very fertile imaginations and seem to portray a better understanding of true human nature on-screen than most without sacrificing the entertainment value. I'm a little sad that it starts 15 years after the blackout - I'd really like to see what they think would actually happen in the days, months, and years immediately following the event both individually and socially.

If they don't don't do a good job of telling that story, they'll lose me fast. My TV time is very limited and as it is, I'm still trying to catch up on last year's recordings before all of the premiers start. :faint:

There is a series of books like this starting with "Dies The Fire". Same general principle, higher technology is taken away, mainly electricity but also gunpowder. And what would become of society. The main idea from this author is that the societies that would survive would take on the trappings of the Middle Ages the quickest. I like the book series and will be watching this. The people who like to play with 100 year old tech would be in the best shape like windmills, oil lamps, hand water pumps and primitive weapons and armor.

I watched the first one and it wasn't too bad... I did forget most of it already but will watch the next one to see if it gets better. I don't think enough people realize how quickly everything willl implode if we lose electricity.hin

They were smart not to reveal what caused the blackout since tha will keep people coming back to watch more, even if it sucks overall. I personally think 90% of the US population would be dead within a year if it ever happened.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

There actually was a study on the effect of EMP on running vehicles.

Automobiles

The potential EMP vulnerability of automobiles derives from the use of built-in electronics that support multiple automotive functions. Electronic components were first introduced into automobiles in the late 1960s. As time passed and electronics technologies evolved, electronic applications in automobiles proliferated. Modern automobiles have as many as 100 microprocessors that control virtually all functions. While electronic applications have proliferated within automobiles, so too have application standards and electromagnetic interference and electromagnetic compatibility (EMI/EMC) practices. Thus, while it might be expected that increased EMP vulnerability would accompany the proliferated electronics applications, this trend, at least in part, is mitigated by the increased application of EMI/EMC practices.

We tested a sample of 37 cars in an EMP simulation laboratory, with automobile vintages ranging from 1986 through 2002. Automobiles of these vintages include extensive electronics and represent a significant fraction of automobiles on the road today. The testing was conducted by exposing running and nonrunning automobiles to sequentially increasing EMP field intensities. If anomalous response (either temporary or permanent) was observed, the testing of that particular automobile was stopped. If no anomalous response was observed, the testing was continued up to the field intensity limits of the simulation capability (approximately 50 kV/m).

Automobiles were subjected to EMP environments under both engine turned off and engine turned on conditions. No effects were subsequently observed in those automobiles that were not turned on during EMP exposure. The most serious effect observed on running automobiles was that the motors in three cars stopped at field strengths of approximately 30 kV/m or above. In an actual EMP exposure, these vehicles would glide to a stop and require the driver to restart them. Electronics in the dashboard of one automobile were damaged and required repair. Other effects were relatively . Twenty-five automobiles exhibited malfunctions that could be considered only a nuisance (e.g., blinking dashboard lights) and did not require driver intervention to correct. Eight of the 37 cars tested did not exhibit any anomalous response.

Based on these test results, we expect few automobile effects at EMP field levels below 25 kV/m. Approximately 10 percent or more of the automobiles exposed to higher field levels may experience serious EMP effects, including engine stall, that require driver intervention to correct. We further expect that at least two out of three automobiles on the road will manifest some nuisance response at these higher field levels. The serious malfunctions could trigger car crashes on U.S. highways; the nuisance malfunctions could exacerbate this condition. The ultimate result of automobile EMP exposure could be triggered crashes that damage many more vehicles than are damaged by the EMP, the consequent loss of life, and multiple injuries.

The cars will keep running in most nuclear EMP scenarios, but the big concern is the already overloaded electrical grid. Currently utilities have only enough transformers to replace the usual failure rate with long lead times from factories dependent on electricity to build new units. Current long lead times to get electricity restored to storm ravaged areas would go up if utility crews needed to restore the whole nation at once.

I still like The Walking Dead the best... new season in October looks pretty cool.
