No shooting magazines for sale to under-14s

Country sports enthusiasts are furious at a decision by Britain's biggest newsagent to ban children from buying shooting magazines after a campaign by animal rights activists.

WH Smith says youngsters under 14 will not be sold shooting titles, even though it is legal to hold a shotgun licence below that age.
And even adult customers attempting to buy a magazine featuring shooting now face a humiliating alert as staff receive a "till prompt" to check the buyer's age. The high street retailer based the policy on the qualifying age for a firearms certificate and says checks are already in place for a range of products, including scissors and adhesives "where an element of common sense" is required.

However, sports groups point out that there is no minimum age for holding a shotgun licence in Britain, although children below 18 cannot buy or own a gun themselves and under-14s must be supervised by an adult.

Countryside campaigners say the company has shown a "complete lack of understanding of the law" and may now feel the backlash of an angry countryside.

This is Cornwall

Yes this is in England, but.....
The attack on guns, hunting and all things outdoors continues.

Starting Jan. 1, California's Department of Fish and Game will become Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The change, hunters say, reflects a move away from traditional hunting and fishing values and is part of a bigger push by the Humane Society of the United States to eliminate hunting across the nation.

hmmm....it's humiliating to have a clerk get a prompt to check if you are over the age of 14? I guess gun enthusiasts are pretty thin skinned....what a bunch of wussies.

And, OMG, changing the word from game to wildlife...well that is just going too far. The poor hunters obviously didn't know they were hunting wildlife.....if you don't call it game...they just don't know what to do.

OUTRAGEOUS!

Unintended consequences? Kids smoking in the alleyway reading Shooting Times & Shotgun News. Check out that Beretta centerfold! What a walnut stocked hottie!

It will just drive kids to the internet or worse, role playing games where they get a unrealistic view of the damage guns can do.

The change was made "to accurately reflect the state agency's broader mission, representing an ever-expanding constituency" It ranges "from hunters to people who head into the woods to hike and watch wildlife," Casey Pheiffer, wildlife policy director for the group, told NBC News. "Wildlife face so many threats, from poaching to habitat loss, and the agency harnessing the support of all Californians — not just one constituency — is so important moving forward."

I have no problem with a name change after understanding the above. Ther is so much more to wildlife than hunting and fishing.

Edit to add:

Thank you very much Grady for making this a topic. Quite a breath of fresh air here in the Courthouse. I am hoping that nobody tries to make it a partisan issue because it is definately not.

I wonder if there are any rules in Colorado preventing under 14's from buying high capacity magazines. I don't think there are in most locales.

Do they have a way from keeping the 14 year olds from ordering a yearly subscription? It would be cheaper than paying the news stand prices too...

Agreeed on that point.

However, there is an international push to disarm law abiding citizens. Look at some of the "zero tolerance” policies put in place in some schools where young kids were suspended or expelled for simply drawing pictures of guns or pointing their fingers like a pistol and saying bang bang. I would venture that there are those who would oppose The Kids Turkey Shoot sponsored by COFA on grounds that kids shouldn’t be exposed to the sport of shooting.

Oh I get it...as a gun owner, with a family of hunters.....I was just amused by the hyperbole used to make this appear to be an assault on gun owners. No one is taking away your guns, or my guns....and I choose not to jump at shadows, but to be amused by those who do..

See how easy the liberal Archer accepts government requiring photo ID to buy a first amendment publication even though most 14 year old kids don't have photo ID but she wouldn't have an issue with people voting without ID.
