The State department is responsible for the security of embassies and they failed in what looks to be an attempt to mask al Qaeda's resurgence in Libya. This is a big deal because of the political aspect, not so much the attack itself.
Actually, tower, it was a consulate where the Libyan attack took place. The embassy is in Tripoli and there is considerable difference between the two, security-wise. Marines typically guard embassies but their job there is to protect the building itself and the intellegence that might be held there, not primarily the people. In any case, requests for additional security have to go through channels and Congress has to approve any additional funds needed. That isn't something that happens quickly. As for the idea that there was an attempt to mask al Qaeda's efforts in Libya or that someone "should have seen" signs in time to stop the attack,
Philip Giraldi has an interesting bit on that today

Though I am in no way a fan of President Obama’s foreign and security policies, the flailing that the Republican Party is engaging in at the moment to demonstrate some kind of cover-up in the aftermath of the Benghazi attack reveals a complete lack of understanding of how intelligence collection and analysis works.
Id have a lot more respect for republicans if they knew what was going on in the world and just came out and said.."I like my gas prices being half of what the rest of the world pays...And I don't care who dies or how many countries we have to ruin to keep it that way" Instead they act like we are this wonderful beneovelent country that is being unfairly attacked for no reason whatsoever?
Yeah, and you guys lied us into a 3 trillion dollar coporate walfare occupation in Iraq where a million innocent civilians died, and now your talking about debt and security for a few office workers?
AA, the trouble with that article is that there was real time drone recon of the entire attack. Thanks for the correction on consulate vs. embassy. I just had that fixed in my mind and would have missed it if you hadn't pointed it out.
