At my workplace there are a large number of first time gun buyers this year.

Glocks are getting hard to find.

The SKS is starting to get rare.

To my amazement, the Mosin Nagant has all but disappeared (they were cheap - so they all got bought up).

I've had no problems finding 1911s (my favorite). Of course, they're below the 10 round limit.

If you think you need a repeater rifle - look to a Ruger (44 mag) or Rossi (44, or 357) lever action.
They're still fairly easy to find.

I just located a Rossi r92 in 45LC for a friend (12 round capacity --- won't be around long)

Big challenge from what I can see is ammo. However - 45LC has a benefit ---- it's used for handguns as well as rifles.

I recommend Hornady's leverevolution ammo.

I might be wrong - but I think the powers that be are more interested in ammo control.
(the shortage has more to do with speculation than control, right now)

I agree, it's going to be easier to regulate and tax the heck out of ammo. And like you said .223 ammo is nowhere to be found. I may sell my AR while they are hot and get something with cheaper ammo.

Hmmm... various federal departments (not DOD) have been buying up ammo by the truckload... another Obama "shovel ready" scheme... keep the weapon manufacturers in federal dough... take the ammo off the streets?

Record ammunition buys for the DHS? While some conspiracy theorists are predicting FEMA troops coming about, I think it is more they have too much money they need to spend at the end of the budget year. The different branchs under Homeland Security will have enough for training purposes for the next decade.

Right, unverifiable personal anecdotes by Fred is perfectly acceptable evidence of large increases in first time gun buyers as opposed to verified scientific polling organizations.

I keep seeing undocumented remarks of record ammunition buys by the DHS. Yet, when it comes to finding actual evidence of this, all I see are links to right wing blogs. Does anyone have any credible sources that the DHS is buying ammunition at rates markedly different than previous years? Or that such ammunition buys are affecting ammunition prices? Or do we just accept that Fred has personally seen people at his workplace selling ammunition to the DHS?

If you check Green Mountain Guns forum, they are also seeing an increase in first time gun buyers. It is anecdotal for Colorado but GMG has a huge chunk of firearm sales in Colorado and one of the biggest markets for used guns in the region.
