DENVER -- Exactly eight months after dozens of people were shot in a suburban Denver movie theater, Gov. John Hickenlooper will sign new restrictions on firearms in Colorado, signaling a historic change for Democrats who traditionally shied away from taking on gun control in a state where owning a gun is as common as owning a care in some rural areas.
The Democratic governor plans to sign new limits on ammunition magazines and a landmark expansion of background checks on Wednesday in his office, surrounded by legislative sponsors and their guests. The signings will mark a significant moment in Colorado, a state with a moderate strek and a pioneer tradition of self-reliance.
Over the last month, Colorado has been viewed as a test for how far the nation is willing to go on new restrictions after the horror of shootings at a Connecticut elementary school and in a movie theater in Aurora, Colo. There, eight months ago on July 20, a gunman dressed in body armor and carrying an arsenal of firearms killed 12 people and wounded dozens of others.
"I am happy the governor is signing common-sense legislation that reduces gun violence in our communities by keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, domestic violence offenders and the seriously mentally ill," said Democratic Rep. Rhonda Fields, who represents the district where the theater shooting happened.
It appears that Gov. Hickenlooper may be delayed in getting his messages this morning...
He is busy doing a press-conference following the assassination of the Colorado Dept of Corrections Chief. A gunman knocked on his door, and shot him in the chest when he answered the door.
IT appears the Congress will not pass legislation addressing the Second Amendment.....all that seems DEAD. They in this instance are wise. The CO legislature will get no support in WDC.....they are at risk of being tossed 2014.....this issue IMHO will pass the power back to Republicans in CO at many levels. It would be folly to expend any tax $$$ on any gun control laws until post 2014.
The murder of the COC CO is tragic......BUT not a surprise......the USA has 5% of the world's population and 25% of the incarcerations.....mostly for minor issues......."Hicckysnapper" said this was possibly to intimidate......sum'pin......the ONLY way police can be effective is via public support.......it is slipping badly.
A really good read by Fred Kaplin is "The Insurgents" addressing a parallel to the USA situation IMHO......There may well be a slow under the radar in USA insurgency.....the first step to counter is for authorities to regain the support of the people......much lost post 911.
Recalll LAPD did not catch Dormer........citizens turned him......the police are essentially dependent on the citizens good will. The NC police and FEDS gave up on finding Rudolph after seven years and $75M......and he was being protected by locals.......so it is.....
Wake up folks.......aslo drug cartels are very active here and in the prison system.......
I am a life long Democrat. I have never voted for a Republican. I am 100% AGAINST these worthless new gun laws. They will not stop violence. They will not stop hate. They WILL stop people from voting for Democratic candidates in the future. They WILL force a great manufacturing business out of Colorado. They WILL force all the supporting businesses out of business or the area.
This is absurd; you add more bad worthless gun laws and then sue local county governments when they want to ban fracking that will kill tens of thousands of Coloradans in the future. Criminals, by nature, do not honor the LAW, so what or who, are we trying to limit?
