IRS 'Scandal' Fades As Documents Show Scrutiny Of Democratic Groups, ACORN Successors

WASHINGTON -- Officials at the Internal Revenue Service were encouraged to flag groups with the word "emerge" in their names as well as potential successors to the anti-poverty organization ACORN, according to documents released by Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday.

The documents add another complicated layer to the ongoing (albeit diminished) controversy surrounding the IRS screening of Tea Party groups in 2010 and 2011. They also take additional steam out of the Republican Party's insistence that the tax agency was politically motivated against conservative groups when it considered whether or not to grant tax-exempt, 501(c)(4) status.

Groups with the word "emerge" in the name tend to lean more Democratic. As The New York Times previously reported, three such organizations -- Emerge Nevada, Emerge Maine and Emerge Massachusetts -- all were denied tax-exempt status because the IRS determined that they existed strictly to benefit Democratic candidates.

"Once again it is clear that the Inspector General's report left out critical information that skewed the audit's findings and set the stage for Republicans to make completely baseless accusations in an effort to tarnish the White House..."

Wow... Still trying to sell that stale Kool-Aid?... Isn't it interesting what you can come up with when you try to take one clip out of a whole sequence of things and make a big deal out of it... (Sort of reminds me of the NRA wackos taking the earliest on-the-scene 911 calls at the Newtown Massacre, and trying to use them to imply a whole "conspiracy theory"...)


Did you hear about the one where 30% of the mental-giants of the Republican/TeaBagger Party in Louisiana blame Obama for the failures of the Katrina disaster? (Three years BEFORE he even took office?) Oh, wait... Those are the same mental-giants that passed laws to force creationism into their classrooms... My bad....

If the IRS did nothing wrong why is she pleading the 5th? If you were being investigated and were innocent wouldn't you want to have your full say before Congress on tape?

Looks like she just wrote her own contempt ticket. She can respond to the Dept of Justice with a full interview, when last I checked was part of the government but can't/won't before Congress? Looks like she gave up her 5th amendment right. Send her butt to jail for a long time.
