Loyal Obama Supporters, Canceled by Obamacare

"...I’ve been skeptical about media stories featuring those who claimed they would be worse off because their insurance policies were being canceled on account of the ACA. In many cases, it turns out, the consumers could have found cheaper coverage through the new health insurance marketplaces, or their plans weren’t very good to begin with. Some didn’t know they could qualify for subsidies that would lower their insurance premiums.

So I tried to find flaws in what Hammack told me. I couldn’t find any.

The couple’s existing Kaiser plan was a good one.
Their new options were indeed more expensive, and the benefits didn’t seem any better.
They do not qualify for premium subsidies because they make more than four times the federal poverty level, though Hammack says not by much.
Hammack recalled his reaction when he and his wife received a letters from Kaiser in September informing him their coverage was being canceled. “I work downstairs and my wife had a clear look of shock on her face,” he said. “Our first reaction was clearly there’s got to be some mistake. This was before the exchanges opened up. We quickly calmed down. We were confident that this would all be straightened out. But it wasn’t.”

I asked Hammack to send me details of his current plan. It carried a $4,000 deductible per person, a $40 copay for doctor visits, a $150 emergency room visit fee and 30 percent coinsurance for hospital stays after the deductible. The out-of-pocket maximum was $5,600.

This plan was ending, Kaiser’s letters told them, because it did not meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act. “Everything is taken care of,” the letters said. “There’s nothing you need to do.”

The letters said the couple would be enrolled in new Kaiser plans that would cost nearly $1,300 a month for the two of them (more than $15,000 a year).

And for that higher amount, what would they get? A higher deductible ($4,500), a higher out-of-pocket maximum ($6,350), higher hospital costs (40 percent of the cost) and possibly higher costs for doctor visits and drugs."...

Doesn't it warm your heart when Dems realize they have been had. Hit them in the pocketbook until it hurts.

from the link BB provided

San Francisco architect Lee Hammack says he and his wife, JoEllen Brothers, are “cradle Democrats.” They have donated to the liberal group Organizing for America and worked the phone banks a year ago for President Obama’s re-election.

Not finding it now but sometime today, maybe in Sebelius remarks (?) to Congress there were some comments about the ACA website not providing accurate information on the plans and the information provided is all subject to change and it may be considerably more than what people are being told. Anyone have any links? Thanks.

Sorry WindPeak, I don't have any links for you but I'll look and get back to you when I find them. As for the folks featured in the story, imagine how they must feel now that Barry's second administration is unraveling and all of the "lies" conservatives and Republicans told turn out to be the truth.

Do American's have a long enough memory to make it twelve months from now and make better choices in the voting booth? I bet the big chunk of money missing from their paychecks to cover healthcare will help them remember every time they collect a paycheck, at least Americans that still have jobs anyway. Food stamps are being cut and it seems like a week doesn't go by that we don't hear some new news about a failed green business funded by Federal loans. These are the failures we know about, what about the other issues that the current administration has managed to suppress so far?

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

SO FAR, about 4 million have been cancelled and many of those may not have the money to buy the more expensive policy. The insurance companies need to replenish those policies just to get back to where they were Sept 30, then they need to get another 7 million non-Medicare just to make this thing work.

Anyone see this happening other than in the progressive imagination?

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

This is funny. Last sentence of the paste below. " Begich demanded the administration fix the problems immediately". I guess he still thinks Obama is the messiah, complete with a magic wand.
They are running scared.

"During a two-hour meeting that was not on the president’s public schedule, the president met with 15 Senate Democrats facing the voters next year, as well as Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman Michael Bennet, D-Colo.

Sen. Mark Begich of Alaska issued a release after the meeting torching the administration.

“It is simply unacceptable for Alaskans to bear the brunt of the Administration’s mismanagement of the implementation of the Affordable Care Act and that is the message U.S. Senator Mark Begich delivered to President Obama today,” his office said in a statement blasted to reporters.

The release went on to say that Begich complained about “an unworkable website, technical glitches and inaccurate information about peoples’ individual situations. Begich demanded the administration fix the problems immediately

did anybody catch "Seblious's" testimony yesterday when she answered "yes" that Felons could be handling the most sensitive information that you put on the web site? how do you feel about that?

I don't like the ACA, but people are in no way forced to use the exchanges and give info to felons.

You still have the right to contact a number of companies that sell insurance and get quotes and compare yourself without sucking someone else into the process. You can give all kinds of info to them and feel better because no one has ever reported how many of those private phone workers or the 1,000s of people they give your info to are felons, better to just not know.

It is unfortunate that a small % of people are getting cancelled, but the exchanges are optional. (Colorado only has a 5% cancellation rate predicted by the state, 250k, and if the number is only 4 million nationally, that means Colorado is on the high side (higher % cancelled but only 5%).

As there has been much talk about how many are getting cancelled in the last quarter of this year, does anyone have any numbers for how many people normally get cancelled in a quarter, perhaps the number is not greater than normal, we have just changed the reason? Just asking.
