If the aircraft is pinging you do not need a SSN to locate. If it is not emitting would a SSN use active sonar to search?
Fred.....I know not....if I did you have no need to know. We have assets in that area and deep an SSN can pick up a whale at 200 miles±......depending on the strength of the pinger passive the SSN can pick it up several hundred miles out........several not defined.......a surface ship has to contend with thernalclines in those waters......
Blazer....you do not get it at all.......BTW, IF the attack boat using passive systems finds the acoustic pinger, the info will be passed to a surface unit or satellite and the SSN goes its merry way.......silent service is indeed silent....as in forever....we make the CIA look like a Broadway musical......
Why was this done.....motive.......? My guess is to just show the world it can be done........as the SEALs say....revenge best served on a cold platter and a perfect op is one where the enemy never saw it coming and never finds out who did it......ahhhhhhh perfect............think 911...........
Why would a pilot fly for 5 hours .....why not plunge it immediately. ???? Probably not........possibly the hijackers gassed the plane and had masks themselves........assuming they got the gear on board.......or by taking it up high and depressurising they killed most on board.....most likely they took the cockpit, locked the door and bounced the folks aft continuously to keep then off balance......and no air marshals in all probability.....still it flew for five hours............
