No this is not about partisan bickering or voting fraud or teabaggers hatin on poor people and safety nets.

Does not anyone wonder how this couple pulled off this scam for so long in two different states? Either the social services bureaucracy is incredibly incompetent or this couple was extremely efficient at conning the system since 2005. Choose A or B. It should not be that hard for the government to use common computer tools, credit and background checks to catch this kind of fraud earlier.

"According to Hennepin County Attorney’s office, between Jan. 1, 2005, and May 31, 2012, Colin Chisholm III, 62, and Andrea Chisholm, 54, received the public assistance illegally from several government programs designed to help the poor."

Once again, this all just comes down to common sense. Is it easier to steal large amounts of money from a private company that has an honest and competent accounting dept., or is it easier to steal from the gov't where nobody seems to be very concerned about waste and fraud combined with the fact that the gov't is so big, that fraud is only discovered many years after it happens (if at all)?

The more we allow gov't to grow, the less we should be surprised when more people game the system.

Surprised they got caught. And we only hear about the ones who get caught. Imagine how many more are out there still collecting. My wife works for a workmen's comp insurance outfit and they will investigate people claiming disability who are actually fine because the investigative branch gets bonuses for finding fraud. Are there similar programs at the state level for finding welfare fraud?

A workman's comp company is trying to maximize profit, therefore they actively try to find the fraud. There is no profit motive in gov't, therefore there is little incentive to actively find the fraud, which only incentivizes more fraud.

There might even be disincentives in government to find fraud. If an agency eliminates 20% of its budget by finding fraud, they will get less money next fiscal year.

There aren't...And that's stupid... But hey, if you use "might be", then it doesn't have to be truthful, does it?

OK. I clearly stand corrected. According to LJ, there are trememdous incentives at the state level to crack down on welfare fraud.
She neglects to mention them or show examples of them so I guess I just have to trust her. I don't see many stories about welfare cheats being caught however. Maybe our press is failing us again? Or welfare fraud is so pervasive that only the major stories like this one make the news. Oh wait, LJ lied about there being no voter fraud even after multiple examples of it were found.

And I thought you were going to go with the talking point, individual welfare fraud is nothing compared to corporate welfare fraud. :HighFive: Medicare & Medicaid corporate deceit!
