I like visiting nature but I don't want to live there

"In 2009 I was asked by a journalist for my thoughts on the importance of Earth Hour. Here
is my response.

I abhor Earth Hour. Abundant, cheap electricity has been the greatest source of human
liberation in the 20th century. Every material social advance in the 20th century depended
on the proliferation of inexpensive and reliable electricity. Giving women the freedom to
work outside the home depended on the availability of electrical appliances that free up time
from domestic chores. Getting children out of menial labour and into schools depended on
the same thing, as well as the ability to provide safe indoor lighting for reading.
Development and provision of modern health care without electricity is absolutely
impossible."...

:like: Just like a bunch of liberals to spend Saturday night sitting in the dark.

Yes. heaven forbid we should all try to lower our utility bills and save a bit of $$.
The idea Fred, is to turn off their "non-essential" lights not every light.
But don't miss an opportunity to turn this into a partisan issue (Again)
I understand this is just an hour, but it should raise awareness to energy conservation.

Now if we can just figure out a way to bring Conservatives back to the conservation movement.

I am looking forward to a long power outage to remind ourselves how important family can be instead of playing on electronic devices. Early to sleep, early to rise, talk with family, enjoy nature while you haul water, etc.

I have no problem with it, especially since I'm constantly walking around my house turning off lights and TVs. When my kids keep forgetting, I like to steal their light bulbs or computer power cords while they are at school. It doesn't take long before they figure out what to do.

IF you viewed EARTH FROM SPACE......you would be in awe of the stark contrast.....whole
continents (North America specifically) is one continuous bright, blazing beacon of illumination.
(during Earth Day hours THAT light pollution is mitigated and you can ACTUALLY view earth at
night as it was MEANT to be seen.) JMO.....the gesture is SYMBOLIC :smackshead:

Fish, there are conservatives involved in conservation. Probably far more than you would imagine. I agree with you about utility bills. It's crazy how people complain about their utility costs and leave electronic items running all the time. It's just stupid. Turn crap off, use power strips that you can turn off to eliminate phantom draw, and use just a bit of common sense and make a little effort and you'll pay less to those 'evil' energy companies.

I'd love to see municipalities really make an effort to reduce unnecessary outdoor lighting. Then maybe folks in the city would actually be able to see the stars for a change.

Well being a city dweller myself, I know from experience that criminals love the dark. My car lot was constantly robbed until I put up some big lights to chase away the roaches. I also notice that you mountain folk like to leave outdoor lights on, you just don't have the density or the same kind of roach population to justify more.

So sorry to have offended you PF. Didn't realize you were so thin skinned and couldn't take a joke. If you want to sit in the dark, I will stop picking on you.

BTW, we have solar power and only resort to the generator when the sun doesn't cut it. So I might even be more earth friendly than you.
