More than a million Ukrainians have fled their nation. Anti-Putin Russians are fleeing their homeland too, but once the reach other nations they don't have access to their bank accounts. Maybe it is time to reexamine the sanctions?
Thomas Sowell: There are no solutions, just trade-offs.
The answer: Absolutely! The banning of Russian Vodka is a bridge too far.(sarcasm).
Slo Joe seems to think that the Eurocentric view is the only one. One has to note that 2.1 billion customers (China and India) are available to Russia. The other countries of the Southern Hemisphere should also be added to that customer base.
WELL NOW, look's like China has a teeny weeny little problem....a 2013 agreement/pledge/treaty....most of article behind pay wall....BUT u can read between the lines..."it's going to be complicated".....how's this enter into the WHOLE PICTURE
STRAIGHT talk from someone who knows.....TRANSLATED...nail the s.o.b to the wall,he will be toast and
"taken away".....put all cards on the table and do NOT back down.
Fred,
Would you find it interesting to know the demographics of those fleeing Ukrainians? Would you be surprised to find that the majority are males 18-40? Would it surprise you to learn that one of the main reasons for Ukrainians to desire membership in the EU so that they could migrate to western EU members seamlessly?

Not at all. I abhor the draft. And there are much higher wages in the West and less chance of the Russians invading Spain or Belgium.

It appears that Russia has scored in their half of the inning. The West, France, Italy, Great Britain, etc have confiscated 2 or 3 yachts and a soccer team.
Russia has now picked up 515 jet airliners worth $10 billion.
Not to worry however because the WSJ tells us that Russia will not be able to maintain the planes.
"Taking ownership of foreign aircraft will only have limited effect, though. Sanctions forbid maintenance, updates, support or the supply of spare parts for planes. Modern passenger jets require high levels of maintenance and flying them could pose risks to passengers.
American special forces like Delta and SEAL teams are in Ukraine right now training army personnel. And Russia has been capturing hundreds of thousands of Ukranians and holding them in Russia.

To answer the question in the topic line: Yes. But against itself (USA & EU) not Russia. Here is an excerpt from Yellen's speech at the IMF Conference
…”Europe clearly needs to reduce its dependence on Russia with respect to energy. But we need to be careful when we think about a complete European ban on say oil imports. We want to harm Russia – that would clearly raise global oil prices would have a damaging impact on Europe and other parts of the world. And counterintuitively it could actually have very little negative impact on Russia because although Russia might export less, its price for its exports would go up.”
Russia can feed itself, provide gas and oil for itself and produce necessary consumer goods. The EU cannot. Moral - Don't poke the bear.
