Given that the Federal Reserve is not a real barrier to solving the debt ceiling crisis without Congress, the White House has the freedom to be bolder. Joe Biden and Janet Yellen should threaten to deploy any of the alternative options being proposed, and if Republicans don’t pass a “clean” debt ceiling increase, simply use one of them. The White House doesn’t have to negotiate with hostage takers, so it shouldn’t.

Politics is compromise unless the legislature foolishly gives the Executive Branch too much power. Then you can steamroll your political opponents instead of cut your out of control spending. President Biden doesn't give a damn that we are already in debt 31 trillion dollars, he wants to give away trillions more to college graduates who took out loans. Blue collar workers who took out loans to start businesses? They will not get bailed out by Joe.

The tightly coordinated messaging and political escalation reflects a deadline that is growing closer, officials said. But it also underscores an understanding that McCarthy and his leadership team face their own critical intraparty moment as they attempt to coalesce around their own proposal ahead of a vote next week.

That House Republican plan, should McCarthy whip the votes to pass it, is dead on arrival in the Senate. White House officials view the proposal less as a tangible way to shift the entrenched political dynamics and more as an opportunity to launch a whole new array of policy attacks, officials say.

Republicans have made clear, however, they view the opposite as true. A House-passed bill should force Biden to the table and serve as a demonstration of Republican unity and resolve.

President Biden and Senator Schumer have no right to play politics with the debt ceiling,” McCarthy said on the House floor Wednesday, calling on Biden and Democrats to enter negotiations.

McCarthy has insisted he can marshal the votes to pass his proposal.

bolded, How absolutely asinine a statement, when the R's have been doing nothing but "playing fast and loose" with politics.....A STALEMATE IS NOW ASSURED..... and the timeline for default has escalated to the end of May, NOT Q 3.....(as a reminder....Mercury is retrograde, will go direct in mid May....what magnificent timing. Don't worry, they will work something out at the 11th hour that will include massive new spending for their favorite projects. There is a reason why they call it the uni-party.

President Biden has refused to meet with Speaker McCarthy about creating a compromise bill. Will Joe let the government shut down so that he can show he is a tough guy who can take on "MAGA"? (Even though President Trump is currently out of power?)

Previously, Republicans have raised the debt ceiling without issuing demands. Three times, they addressed the borrowing cap under President Donald Trump without demanding fiscal reforms. Each time, Democrats serving in the minority also supplied their votes in a bid to avert a crisis.

Under Biden, Republican lawmakers have adopted a more aggressive posture, aiming to use the threat of a fiscal crisis as a political tool while blaming Democrats for the burgeoning debt. In reality, policies supported by both parties have contributed to a growing tide of red ink that could exceed $50 trillion over the next 10 years.

An excellent reason to demand spending cuts.

Agree, both parties spend much more than they take in. And both used the one hundred year pandemic as an excuse to spend record amounts!

Would love to see a 3rd party actually restrict spending for a couple of years. Can't trust the current crooks.
