GCI Dorothy G. Page Halfway Award

This year, the Halfway point will be the Grayling 1 checkpoint. The first musher to reach this checkpoint will receive a trophy and his/her choice of $3,000 in gold nuggets symbolic of the history of this interior area of the Iditarod Mining District or a brand-new smartphone with a year of free service from GCI.

GOLD NUGGETS ALMOST A TRADITION....ALWAYS A ULTRA COOL THING. . my brother collects nuggets like rolls of quarters.......no gold coins for him. IT'S AN ALASKAN THING

With today, March 8th, being International Women’s Day, it’s fitting to remember and salute the great women of Iditarod and their accomplishments. From the first woman to finish Iditarod, Mary Shields (1974), to two time Red Lantern recipient Cindy Abbott (2015 & 2017), there are so many strong women mushers who serve as role models for girls and women. Lolly Medley, Pam Flowers, Libby Riddles, Susan Butcher, DeeDee Jonrowe, Aliy Zirkle are only a few of the past Iditarod legends that have inspired other women mushers.

STRONG WOMEN......A WONDROUS THING.

Lost a dog this week. Sad.

See that one musher used all shelter dogs. Hope they finish well.

Next Special Award

Bristol Bay Native Corporation Fish First Award

This year, the award will be given at Kaltag 2, teams’ second stop through Kaltag before they head to the coast. The musher will receive a check for $2,000 and 25 pounds of Bristol Bay salmon.

YUMMOS.....SALMON JERKY,SMOKED SALMON, BAKED SALMON CASSEROLE ....my brother goes up to KENAI most summers...brings back his limit of kings, fyi the runs r getting smaller and smaller because of wide net fishing...by commercial boats.....they cast a wide,.wide net and scoop up the salmon.
THIS IS SO WRONG...THE ESKIMOS DEPEND ON THE RUN FOR THEIR FOOD THRU THE WINTER.......
