Trump may not change his mindset . . . but Canada, China, Vietnam, Germany, and a host of others might very well change theirs, which would result in lower/no tariffs faced by US exporters, which could expand their market presence, driving up their revenue, resulting in more taxes remitted to the US Treasury. If these countries reevaluate their tariffs, Trump will reevaluate ours. Pretty simple equation, is it not?

Ironically what Trump is doing now is what Pelosi, Sanders, and others have advocated for over a period of decades, dating back 30 or more years. So why now speak against what they have previously supported? Because Trump is the one doing it, right? And the collectivists have to resist anyone who isn't one of their own, even when that person's policies are in line with their own.

Along with the worst case scenario you have chosen to adopt because it has been adopted as policy by those who align with your belief system, there is also a best case scenario, and many, many, possibilities that exist between the two extremes. I get that your opinion isn't just your opinion, but those who are more optimistic about the results can also say that their opinion isn't just their opinion. I can likely find just as many economists who say this may be the best thing as you can find who say this might be the worst thing . . . because all of it is opinion HA, none of it is fact.

Now, I'm no better at predicting the future than you have demonstrated yourself to be at it, truth be told, but my opinion, an its NJMO, is that Trump actually doing what he said he'd do is proof that he's not bluffing, not grandstanding for an approval rating, and that is going to have an impact upon how the countries who just had their tariffs raised are going to respond.

In nearly every case, the "retaliatory" tariff is half of the existing tariff those countries charge on US products. I get that zero to 20%, or 37%, is a hefty jump, but it's still only half the amount that country is levying on US goods. I'd call that a wake-up call, not an economic cataclysm. If country that is currently charging an import tariff of 40% cuts their tariff in half in response, that would make the goods they import less expensive to consume, yes? A less expensive commodity is going to save those with fewer economic resources a greater percentage of their income than it would save a "rich" person, right? The exact opposite of the scenario you are seeking to paint. And it's a distinct possibility, isn't it, it's just as likely of an outcome at this moment as the tariffs costing $1700 more per household, isn't it. That you aren't expecting, based upon your beliefs, that outcome doesn't mean it isn't a possible scenario, right?
