Interesting story in the WSJ today about a secret military base America built in Greenland. The United States has a treaty with Greenland and Denmark that let us emplace and store nuclear weapons on the island. After spending more than a decade building the base, the US gave up on its original purpose as a ICBM base. Seems the Polar ice was too unstable and constantly shifting so they couldn't trust the atomic weapons to launch or even for the base to not get caved in by advancing glaciers.
Oops! Another time on Greenland an atomic weapon from a B-52 crashed and broke apart sending radiation everywhere. Denmark was pretty upset after that happened.
