Proposal to End Military Abortion Ban Complicates Defense Budget Bill

Add abortion to the list of hot-button social issues that could derail a sweeping budget blueprint for the nation's military.

An amendment from Sen. Roland Burris, D-Ill., to end a longstanding ban on abortions at U.S. military hospitals overseas is attached to the defense authorization bill set to come up for a vote in the Senate.

The move has been widely opposed by social conservatives and only further complicates the debate over the defense spending package. Senate Democrats already have drawn the ire of Republicans by trying to add to the bill measures to repeal the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy banning gays from serving openly in the military and provide young illegal immigrants who attend college or join the military a pathway to citizenship.

And the Democrats wonder why they never get anything accomplished. They are the reason all of our bills grow out of control and why our deficit is growing faster in the last 2 years than ever in history. They are pathetic! They know that Americans don't want what they have to offer so they have to always try and slip their agenda into bills that this nation has to pass and they they try and blame the Republicans for stalling or holding up legistlation or being the party of NO. You dame right we are the party of no. No more crap that Americans don't want! If you can't get it passed and Americans don't want it, then stop muddying up all the other good bills by trying to slide it in the back door. And they wonder why they are about to lose 50 seats or more in the house and senate.

Have to agree with the others. I hate when Pols make bills so complicated no one knows what they mean. Or even worse, adding something that isn't related to try to get a popular bill passed.

I loved when Colorado made ballot issues just cover one thing.

Except in the cases mentioned in the article...rape, incest, or to save the mother...abortion is an elective procedure similar to having plastic surgery on your nose or making a woman's breasts bigger. The thinking is not to perform a procedure that isn't needed or that doesn't give some kind of value to the physicians and/or other medical personnel performing the procedure.

Having someone performing abortions on women, whether active-duty or dependents or civilians, that decide they don't want the pregnancy takes precious people away from those that may truly need their services.

As with most things DoD-related, it is supposed to be what is needed, not what is wanted.

Overseas DoD hospitals/clinics are used by American civilians that work on military installations, they are used by other Americans living in the overseas community, and in some cases they are used by local nationals working on the installations if they are injured on the job or if the nearest local hospital is too far away.

In each of these cases, there is some kind of pay-back for the services received. But these services aren't only limited to overseas facilities. The two military hospitals in San Antonio also handle civilian cases and again, there is some kind of pay-back for services received.

I do not think holding the DoD Bill hostage to allow abortions at overseas hospitals is OK. It has nothing to do with funding our military.
