So, I reserved a couple of rooms at the motel there and we drove over on Christmas Eve. It had snowed over 24 inches here in the mountains just before Christmas and we had to dig out before we could begin our trip.
Whenever we arrived at Monument Valley we were THE ONLY PEOPLE THERE. Absolutely no one else was in the park. We had the motel to ourselves and the resturant had only a moderate crowd.
We toured the park and saw all of the sights by ourselves, unhurried, and in solitude. We were in the wilderness of the Wild West and could enjoy the feeling that we were pioneers alone. The temperature was in the mid-60s, full sunshine, and calm.

This was the last Christmas in which we were all living at home. The next spring my daughter received her MS degree in computer science and went to Virginia to work for the NSA. My other daughter has just now received her MS degree in CS and has accepted employment with the FBI. After yesterday, I do not know how many Christmases will see us all gathered together for the holiday. But the Monument Valley Christmas will remain with us for the rest of our lives.

This vacation was not expensive, costing maybe $1000 for everything. It involved less than 3 days and all driving could be done in daylight.

MB, your post just made my entire day! Sounds like you have done a wonderful job with your daughters and that you are very blessed. I love that idea too and maybe we will have to try it one year. Memories like that are priceless. Wishing you and your family, no matter where they are, a blessed 2011. :sunshine:

I hope that everyone enjoyed their Christmas and spent lots of time with their families instead of online in a forum arguing like school children.
