I wonder if states that feel more united are more likely to support small businesses. You might shop at your local store if you feel a kinship with them or buy business supplies locally to support your community. I have recently heard a couple commercials locally from a jewelry store asking people to buy locally along with a hardware store.
I do try to support local restaurants and business suppliers in my workplace but am less successful at home.
