I have a Iphone4 and love it... as far as Skype. I have done a few vid-chats on my Iphone with my daughter in Florida and quality was surprisingly good. Skype on my desktop also has been great for me to be able to talk with my Dad, he is almost deaf and can't use a regular phone, but with video-chat and his speakers turned up it has allowed us to talk like normal, an awesome thing!
As far as the Verizon Iphone, I was quite surprised that they went CDMA only, I have a friend in the industry who actually had a LTE version he had to test with using the VoD (voice over data) and it was very good quality. It was in a 3gs like case. I think it was as much to do with Verizon's slower than expected LTE roll-out as it has to do with the Apple push back on the design issues claimed by them.
