Susana Martínez Draws Ire of Immigrant Advocates in New Mexico
Just a few weeks into her term, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martínez already has a major fight on her hands.
Immigrant rights groups are planning to rally at the Capitol in protest of the Republican governor's immigration policies.
Somos Un Pueblo Unido, an immigrants rights based in Sante Fe, is helping to organize Monday's rally at the Capitol against what it considers anti-immigrant policies.
The planned demonstration comes a week after Martínez, who became the first Latina governor in the country after the November elections, issued an executive order requiring state law enforcement to check the immigration status of criminal suspects.
Administration officials say state agency law enforcement will ask about the immigration status of those arrested for crimes, but that won't happen routinely when state police stop someone for a traffic violation.
Still, some Democratic lawmakers have objected to the governor's executive order, saying it will lead to racial profiling by law enforcement.
Martínez also wants the Legislature to repeal a law allowing driver's licenses for illegal immigrants.
Actually, she asked the CIO (Chief Information Officer) and the MVD to put together a plan to repeal the driver's license waivers the first week she was in office. I always thought that was a bad idea in the first place, but I can see why they wanted it...The idea was to force them to get insurance so every time one of them was involved in an accident it wasn't a case of "uninsured motorist." Unfortunately, in practice, it never worked and the number of "uninsured motorist" accidents just climbed. Repealing it isn't going to win her any friends in the latino community, but it will certainly cater to the anti-immigrant faction.
As I have said before, I do NOT support illegal aliens, and I do not support laws that encourage it. But I also know that they need to find a way to stop the flow and find some comprehensive way of shutting it down. Just building fences, electronic or physical, is not going to do it.

Dependence on illegal labor is the elephant in the room for the U.S. restaurant business. And experts say the Chipotle ICE investigations are a wake-up call for an industry that is one of America's biggest employers and generates over $300 billion in annual sales, according to research firm IBISWorld Inc.
Chipotle — a Denver-based company whose motto is "Food With Integrity" — is one of the most well-known names caught in the immigration enforcement shift that began two years ago.
So, you want to "send a message", don't eat at Chipotle... And let them know WHY you won't eat there... (I personally don't care for their food, and don't eat there anyway...But if you want to do something other than piss & moan in a chatroom, here's one way to do it.)

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is preparing to crack down on 60 Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants in the D.C.-Virginia area in an effort to weed out undocumented workers, the restaurant chain confirmed Monday.
The popular burrito chain received "notices of inspections" from the federal agency alerting owners that they'll be audited to determine if they're in compliance with employment eligibility laws.
