I agree. I posted it and then read the lyrics.
If it would have mentioned a green ghost-like apparition in the middle east visible to only one video recording device from a great distance and not noticed by any of the actual people present, I would have switched sides immediately and started preaching the truth of the imminent apocalypse.
REM didn't predict it, so I still say it's a reflection of a shoe.

No - I don't seriously think we should stone false prophets. I'm expressing my opinion with a touch of cynicism. I apologize if my dry mid-western humor escapes detection.
I have little patience with the end-times industry. I have serious theological reservations a number of "end-times" experts who have literally built businesses around their patented interpretation of scripture. They confuse what's profitable for the church - with what's profitable for them. Scripture predicted this industry, and warns us to stay the heck away. My opinion is that it's a distraction to mere Christianity.
I too, have heard some good sermons on the Book of Revelation. The book is, after all, part of scripture, and is inspired and profitable for training in righteousness.
I"d simply prefer that the dollars that I'm a steward for - be used to underwrite the gospel.
