You don't think that could ever happen in America? Well, you might want to brush up on the Real ID Act because it is going to go into effect on May 11, 2011 unless something is done to stop it.

So? Right now we have national ID cards, but every state gets to make their own design.

Considering I have to show photo ID just to buy a beer, why shouldn't we need it for boarding aircraft and cashing a check.

Interesting offshoot: India has started a program to get ID cards for their billion + people.
It will be a huge process since millions of these people have no birth certificates and don't even know their birthdate. Upside? Poor Indians will now be able to use banks and join the formal economy instead of dealing with village loansharks.

You mean like an ID that we need to have for all government databases to use as a key to find all our information across the board? Like a single number that's unique to an individual?

Like a social security number?

God! the horror!!!!!!!!! How will we ever survive?!?!?!?!?

Good example - a number that the government swore would only be used to track benefits information that has turned into the de facto national ID.

People clamor for a way to ensure "illegals" can't get services, jobs, benefits, etc., and for some way to identify them in a way that can't be falsified or counterfeited... Did they think that there was a way to do it without forcing the LEGAL people to carry identification cards too? If you want to stop the ILLEGALS, that's the price.

Nawwww... we just need to tattoo "Fureigner" on the forhead of every Illegal as we catch 'em. Sooner or later we'd get 'em all.

Poppycock. A citizen of a sovereign state is a citizen in the union of states. I don't need an ID issued by the central authority, I have one already that was issued by the state in which I am a citizen. An illegal migrant or illegal immigrant has no such document from any of the states within the union or even one that was issued by the central government that would have been given to them when that authority granted them permission to enter the country. If immigration is solely within the federal authority, then the federal government can issue a nationwide ID for those they legally allow entry to that is valid in all of the states within the union.

My oh my, we already have that, don't we. I believe the common vernacular labels that a "Green Card". Wow. Just think. Anyone that comes to the attention of the law enforcement agencies that has neither a valid state issued form or ID or a valid Green Card is likely here without permission of either the sovereign state or the national government and should be held and prosecuted for violation of the law, punished appropriately if found guilty of that violation and summarily escorted out of the nation when that punishment is finished. Those that aided them in violating that law should also be charged and face appropriate punishment if found guilty of that charge, including employers, friends and family members, just as with other crimes. What a concept.
