They're more flying rats than desert rats but it has emerged China's army is training 10,000 messenger pigeons to serve in the event of a breakdown in mass communication systems.

Maybe a sign they are willing to shut down cell phone and internet coverage in the event of the Arab revolutions moving to China?

Years ago I flew homing pigeons, they are pretty amazing. I’ve dropped them off over 100 miles away and had them beat me home.

For many years I raced homing pigeons. 600 miles, that was the division in which my birds competed. Spent a fortune on my original stock and every once in a while introduced fresh genes into my birds.

Fantastic hobby!
