Since blacks, statistically, are not in the higher tax-brackets, they're hardly leaving because they're being taxed too much...And since the Righties continually suggest that they are as big of a drain-on-society as Hispanics are, the hypocrisy is a bit much, don't you think?
The blacks may not themselves be in higher tax brackets LJ - but they are in a bad economic condition in part because of those higher tax areas - and the policies that drive away higher earners create the worsened conditions for everyone. I wish liberals could understand that bad policy affects everyone. If Socialism and the welfare state worked in any way- Detroit would be attracting more people.
People are not fleeing Detroit because they are in a high tax bracket- bad political policy made it impossible for business owners to stay, so they left. After the producers are gone, a steady decline in the economy prompted many others to leave as there were no jobs left- even the low paying ones. I know quite a few people who have moved into the Evergreen area from the Detroit area - and they are not shy about telling me what a craphole Detroit has become.
First you attack the higher earners and business owners, then the "stuff" flows downhill - and detroit is a perfect example of this. Well the people there got what they voted for - higher taxes for producers- more regulations for business - and more anti-business movements like unions. They got what they voted for- the sad thing is that they will probably move to places like Colorado and vote the same way.
Yeah, Detroit's population has declined over 25% in the last decade... (Hmmmmm... Who was president for all but 2 years of the last decade?) Even YOU can't be dumb enough to suggest that somehow the 25% decline only happened since January, 2009.
During the recession, which officially lasted from December 2007 to June 2009, EPI estimates that the richest fifth of Americans lost 16 percent of their wealth, compared with a 25 percent decline in net worth for the bottom four-fifths of U.S. households. At the end of 2009, the wealthiest fifth of Americans held 87.2 percent of the country's total wealth -- up 2.2 percentage points from 2007 due to larger drops in wealth by those at the bottom.
"The recovery has proceeded on two tracks," the report says. "[O]ne for typical families and workers, who continue to struggle against high rates of unemployment and continued foreclosures, and another track for the investor class and the wealthy, who have enjoyed significant gains in the stock market and benefited from record corporate profits."
For African Americans, the damage was significantly worse: while a quarter of U.S. households held zero or negative net worth at the end of the recession, approximately 40 percent of black households landed in that category. The study found that the median net worth of black households was only $2,200 in 2009--the lowest in history--compared to a $97,900 median for white households. And average black wealth declined by 37 percent from 2007 to 2009, while white wealth declined by 28 percent during the same period.
Must be that ol' "compassionate conservatism" / "Let them eat cake" mentality.
(Hmmmmm... Who was president for all but 2 years of the last decade?)
Really? Your going to blame Bush for what happened in Detroit when many other cities did well during the same time and did not experience a mass exodus? Come on, even you can't be that jaded - Detroit did this to itself. Detroit citizens did that - by voting over and over for politicians who are welfare friendly and business un-friendly.
This is a perfect example of government regulation and taxation run amok, and liberal policy at the local level creating an environment where businesses ran as fast as they could away from that place.
It should be a wake up call, because our national government is going down the same road. What you see happened to Detroit is coming to Americans in general.
When you break it down by race and ethnicity, it is all too painfully clear what is happening. Both whites and blacks are leaving California, the poster state for the liberal, welfare-state and nanny-state philosophy.
Whites are also fleeing the big northeastern liberal, welfare states like Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, as well as the same kinds of states in the midwest, such as Michigan, Ohio and Illinois.
The movement of the black population – especially educated young blacks – is the most striking of all.
They are tired of the liberal BS that has been associated with the places they have lived, and are seeking suburban areas in which to move.
In short, with blacks, as with other racial or ethnic groups, those with better prospects are leaving the states that are repelling their most productive citizens in general with liberal policies.
If they're so tired of the "liberal BS", then why do the Republicans fear them as a voting-bloc so much? Why do the Republicans send their dirty-tricks teams into predominately black areas to prevent as many from voting as possible? Why do some GOP tricksters put out flyers in some areas suggesting that the date of the election has been changed, to depress the black vote?
You're easy too... I sometimes think you actually believe some of the knee-jerk crap you spew...
LJ - do you agree that those folks come to places like Colorado- then start to vote in the same kind of government services and regulations they just got done fleeing from?
I see this happening. I see folks from Detroit, L.A, New Jersey move to Colorado and the next thing you know they are voting for big government services, new taxes, and even Recreation Districts.
And that's a fact. Along with their move to a better place - should be an educated understanding of what makes it a better place.
Don't know LJ, why do idiots run for office and people vote for them even when you can see it's a goat?
Why did the democrats hire Acorn to submit all those non voting/can't vote people in the last election?
I have alot of black associates and some I call friends who did not vote liberal and do not like the policies of either side, they feel that the man in the whitehouse currently is not a good example of what they have become or strived for. And maybe those moving out of liberal repressed areas feel the same.
