National Work Zone Awareness Week
This week, April 4-8th, is National Work Zone Awareness Week, which was created to increase public awareness of work zone safety. Last year, 667 people died and over 30,000 were injured in work zone crashes nationwide. What may be most surprising is that 85-90% of all work zone fatalities are motorists and occupants. To put these numbers in perspective:
Nearly two people are killed and 84 are injured every day in highway work zones.
In a typical five day-day work week, an average of eight motorists and one highway worker are killed.
An average of seven people are injured in a work zone every two hours.
With more than 150 active construction projects this summer, not including maintenance work zones, it is extremely important to plan ahead, obey all construction signs and flaggers and “Slow for the Cone Zone.”
