My former country of residence is cracking down on speeding - the speed cameras will get you if you exceed 160 kph (160 kph is approx. 100 mph)

(shaking head)......

It's a different world over there.

They think going from 160kph to 140kph will make a "significant impact" of reducing crash risk by 90-95%? I'm disbelieving that for some reason...

I've seen a few Top Gear episodes that were recorded there, and it looks nuts! Of course, I would hope that if you're driving that fast that you are also paying more attention to the road? They don't mention total accidents, just that accidents decreased by 25% from 2009 with more rigorous law enforcement. It would be interesting to compare their numbers to similarly structured highways in the US...

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill

SC - the leading cause of death for young UAE nationals is auto accidents.

The highways of Abu Dhabi make the German autobahn seem like a leisurly stroll through the park.

Imagine this formula:
- lots of money - even for young guys
- fast cars
- a fetish for extreme (anything)
- apparently open roads
- high (and sometimes no) speed limits

I was once passed by a very fast Bently --- which later showed up on a photo in the newspaper ---- wrapped around a light post.

There's a couple national "days of mourning" in the UAE each year for sheikhs who die in car crashes. I've seen one happen right in front of my car...... Won't be forgetting it any time, soon.
