Blue Spruce Habitat for Humanity is stretching its reach beyond building houses to offer education to potential homeowners and community members interested in learning about poverty. "We define poverty as a lack of resources. And resources are not only financial, but mental, emotional, spiritual - it's not just being poor," said Susan Brubaker, Blue Spruce program services coordinator.
A financial management class is set for April 30 from 9 a.m. to noon and a May 7 family management class will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Both will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Cross, 28253 Meadow Drive, Evergreen.
Brubaker is currently teaching a 16-week workshop, "Getting Ahead in a Just-Getting-By World." It will be repeated in the fall and is offered to Habitat owners first, then applicants and members of the community.
According to Brubaker, the next new home to be built by Blue Spruce will be in Kittredge in June. Burns added that a misconception about Habitat for Humanity is that the agencies give homes away. "We build homes and we sell them to low-income - not no-income - working families, at cost with zero percent interest."
