"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther
The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill

The Division of Wildlife is running the "Youth Outdoor Skills Day" which includes bow and arrow practice, Hiking safety, .22 shooting range, spin casting bait fishing and fly fishing At Pine Valley Ranch today (Saturday).
We will be set up at the pavilion on the lake. DOW will provide the fly rods, the fly tying vises and tying material as well as some pre tied flies. The DOW will provide a picnic lunch for attendees and volunteers. I don't know the menu but assume hotdogs and hamburgers and other picnic items.
Pine Valley Ranch is located just outside of the town of Pine which is Hyw 285 south from Conifer to Pine Junction (about 10 minutes) where there is a stop light. Take a left at the stop light on to S. Pine Valley Road or CR 126 head east (down the hill) for about 10 minutes until you see the sign for Pine Valley Ranch then take a hard right turn in the middle of a tight left curve in the road. (be careful its tricky) That road is called Crystal Lake road and follow that to the end which is where the Ranch parking is. We will be at the lake pavilion. If you drive into the town of Pine you have gone too far.
We and the grands attended the DOW event this morning and had a ball! Didn't dress for the weather but had a great time anyway. The volunteers helping the kids were patient, knowledgeable, and encouraging as the kids tried new activities. We'll definitely attend one of these again.

Turn-out could have been a little better. I am guessing it was because of the impending weather. All the kids got a free fishing pole. A few learned how to cast with a fly rod and did very well. I think they have been converted. One kid cast through the worst of the rain and never stopped. Great form on the roll and back cast for a newby.
They stocked a lot of fish in that pond this past week and most caught yesterday were released. Nymphs and emergers were working very well.
I did not get a chance to visit the other areas (archery, shooting reange, etc.) but there were A LOT of CDOW folks around. The food was good too (elk bratwurst).
