I thought this was worth posting here. We've been successful with these since last summer.
Here's how they were bear proofing cans in Granby. We had one of the workers that did this all summer long there get ours done.
So far, so good.
Mountain View Waste Can (we own)
Get a piece of steel plate, drill some holes in it for screws (we used steel screws)
cut a slit in the lid where the plate needs to come up through
Screw the plate to the front of the can, letting it stick up enough to get a carabiner through
drop the top and it should slid right over the steel plate
pop a carabiner in
EDS Can (we own)
mount the steel plate, but on this can, you need to drill holes through the front (double side) to get to the screws
You can see the bear claw marks, but gave up after they knocked it over and found they could not open the top
same process, cut a slit for the plate and pop in a carabiner
