Jefferson County bike-race organizers on the lookout for “tacking”
Deer Creek Challenge event promoter says throwing tacks on bike routes has been going on for some time
With summertime cycling season at its peak, organizers of high-profile events in Jefferson County are taking extra steps to discourage “tacking,” in which tacks are maliciously strewn on roads frequented by bicyclists.

I'm not saying I condone the tacking. It's illegal, dangerous and wrong.
But the race organizers will never once stop to consider that the route they take for 'one day' is used as a training route for long before and after their event, and that a single race can cause months of inconvenience to residents.
Tacking is dangerous. Organizing a cycling race on roads that can't handle diverse traffic safely is stupid.

America will never be France and it's love for cycling ala The Tour de France. It is amazing how much the people love the race coming through their villages and turn out to cheer them on as they come through.
Here is a "spoof" that was played on cyclists... it is very funny. Could you imagine if this happened to you? Of course you would need to be riding on one of the usual legs of the Tour for it to be really funny!
the last guy went along with the gag... I love this
Roofing nails are much better- you can still get those short ones so they won't wind up causing problems for motor vehicles.
Actually- I would have never thought of that idea, sounds like someone is getting creative. If it were just one race I could tolerate it- even the incessant training runs that go on for weeks before the race. The problem is that there are several races and they keep adding more every year up here.
There are signs on HWY74 as we speak- for some race this next weekend, warning motorists to expect delays.
It seems reasonable to charge for permits to ride on certain popular roads. Funds collected could go for improvements to lessen the impact e.g. Wider shoulders, dedicated bike lanes better traffic enforcement.
