Is there something to seal holes in trees?

REPORTING IN ON OPERATION SAVE THE ASPENS

PHASE ONE - FIGURE OUT HOW TO DETER DEER AND ELK FROM EATING THE BARK

I have been fairly successful with my experiment of putting deer mesh around the aspens. I just stapled it loosely around the trees up to 7 feet. We have also draped it and anchored it around saplings to give them a chance at becoming a tree and that is working so far as well. The nice thing is this stuff is virtually invisible, so it doesn't detract from nature like those advertised "tree bark covers".

When they go to bite, they run into the mesh and don't like it so they move on.

PHASE TWO - PATCHING UP THE INJURED SOLDIERS
Now, I'd like to plug up some of the bigger holes where insects may get in and damage the trees. It would seem to me that there MUST be something that you can either fill the hole (like you would with putty) and seal it that would be OK for the tree. I have a choke cherry and I LOVE THAT TREE and want to repair it where someone took a bite out of the trunk before discovering they didn't like it. Maybe it was a land shark?

I have not been able to Google the right combination of words to figure it out.

Any ideas?

thanks, Pacamom! I liked the Tree Bandage product over the tree kote because of it's composition. I ordered it and plan to get out there and patch up the aspens. I'll report it in on how well it works.
